Physics Master of Science graduates have both theoretical knowledge and experimental experience. Translating this knowledge into practical, operational tools is a big step. It takes time, training and experience: this is where the multidisciplinary Design and Technology of Instrumentation (DTI) program comes in. Within this program you put your skills into practice to solve real industrial problems, in order to become an inventive, technological design engineer.

Job description

 

First phase at university: courses and assignments

 

During the first phase of nine months of the DTI program you will have a personal set of courses. The courses are geared around technological design (e.g. design processes, project management, entrepreneurship, modeling and statistics), personal development, and deepening your knowledge of physics and engineering. You will also be executing the first assignment in industry by doing a ‘mini-project’. This project confronts you with the ongoing R&D real-life developments in industry.

 

Second phase in industry: design project

 

The next phase, the design project, is spent entirely in industry working on a challenging and innovative technological design task: a real engineering problem that needs to be solved. This project takes 12 months. You are supervised by a designer from industry as well as by a staff member from the department of Applied Physics, and by the DTI management team. So you are supported by scientific knowledge (university), practical design experience (industry) and project management expertise.

 

A wide variety of projects have been executed by the trainees of the DTI program. The projects range from the fabrication of an optical scanner in an endoscope for the detection of cancerous tissue, to industrial fabrication of hermetic coatings for X-ray scintillators, to efficiency measurements for the dredging industry, to measurement equipment on EUV sources. The companies involved are both large (e.g., Philips, Shell, ASML, NXP) as well as mid- and small cap industries (e.g., Moog Bradford, Argus Imaging, Innoluce). Companies pay a considerable amount for the execution of the project. The choice of available projects depends on the demand at the moment and is made in the first nine months.

 

Final assignment: international project

 

The last part of the program is an international project of three months. The project is a high paced project, with a limited time. Projects are done in many countries, all over the world.

 

Other activities

 

Throughout the program there are assignments as well as meetings and workshops with other trainees. Once a month our trainees meet each other at our Design Course Forum afternoons, at which trainees and external speakers give presentations relevant to technological design.

 

Job requirements

 

The program is open to enthusiastic graduates with a university MSc degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and similar disciplines, with a high grade for their MSc research project. It is essential to have a broad interest to learn working on various technologies. Experimental experience gained in a laboratory is important. The candidate must be fluent in English, both written and spoken. For the full year design project, the trainee must be willing to accept a move to another place inside the Netherlands other than Eindhoven. Trainees are expected to learn Dutch.

 

Conditions of employment

 

  • We offer trainees a full time, temporary appointment for the period of 2 years. Trainees will receive a monthly salary of approximately 
  • € 1,800 (before taxes). Also we have a broad package of fringe benefits, including an 8% vacation allowance and a 8,3 % end-of-year allowance. The university has many facilities, e.g. excellent sports facilities. For foreign trainees support is given in finding housing.
