DESCRIPTION

 

This is a 100% Cooperative Extension (CE) appointment, an academic position in the Department of Food Science and Technology. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded and internationally recognized applied research program focusing on fruit and vegetable processing to develop safe, nutritious, and appealing preserved fruit and vegetable products while ensuring reductions in product losses at peak production times. The candidate is also expected to develop an extension education and outreach program that extends information to diverse clientele groups such as small-scale (less than 500 employees) fruit and vegetable processors, and rural and urban food entreprenuers. This individual will be expected to work closely with academic and extension colleagues, including academic senate faculty, government scientists, other cooperative extension academics, and those working in food processing, food entrepreneurship, small farms, and other related fields.

 

Specialists in Cooperative Extension provide statewide leadership to University colleagues, public agencies, community-based organizations, youth, consumers, and citizens in their area of expertise. The Specialist is expected to keep campus and county based University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) academics and clientele apprised of emerging issues and research findings and directions, conduct applied research and develop applications of research-based knowledge to specific problems, and provide educational leadership and technical information support for county-based CE academics and clientele. A Specialist in CE is a primary liaison between University research units and statewide clientele. The Specialist will be expected to provide leadership and participation in University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) Program Teams, workgroups, and Strategic Initiatives, work closely with CE academics toward the resolution of issues of regional and statewide importance, and coordinate statewide programming with UCCE and Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) colleagues throughout California. The Specialist also identifies and considers the needs of all relevant major clientele groups in planning, developing and executing applied research and education programs. The Specialist is evaluated for merit and promotion using four areas of expectation that include Extension Education, Applied Research, Professional Competence and Activity, and University and Public Service.

 

Responsibilities: This is a full time, career-track appointment that includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct mission-oriented research and engage in extension education and outreach that advances the mission of the Department of Food Science and Technology and ANR. The focus of this position will be on food processing. Accordingly, applicants should have the professional background necessary to conduct original research in food processing applied to fruits and vegetables. By developing reciprocal and mutually beneficial relationships with colleagues and with various stakeholders, the candidate should become a knowledgeable partner who can provide reliable information and build research-informed networks to address issues of regional and statewide importance in the state of California.

 

Extension Teaching: A person in this position is expected to provide leadership as a liaison between campus-based researchers, CE campus and county based academics, and clientele and colleague groups such as food processors, growers, and food entrepreneurs. This will include providing information to clientele through print publications, web-based resources and in-person presentations, and serving as a resource for other CE academics.

 

Applied Research: The successful candidate will: 1) coordinate applied research related to fruit and vegetable processing; 2) conduct, and publish the results of applied research or other creative activities designed to improve the quality, safety, shelf life, and nutritional content of processed fruits and vegetables. Areas of emphasis may include any of the following: fruit and vegetable raw material quality, effects of processing on fruit and vegetable color, texture, flavor, nutrient content, and shelf life, microbiological and chemical safety of processed/preserved fruit and vegetable products, and/or novel processing methods

 

Professional Competence and Activity: The successful candidate will be expected to participate in professional society activities including presenting papers at national and international meetings; reviewing manuscripts and grant proposals in his/her area of expertise; and establishing productive working relationships with scientists and extension personnel in other states and countries. The goal would be to gain national and international recognition for scholarly contributions to the science and practices of fruit and vegetable processing, as he/she advances to the higher ranks in the UC system.

 

University and Public Service: The appointee will serve on committees that support the needs of the Department, College, University and ANR, including appropriate ANR Program Teams and Workgroups. The appointee may also serve on advisory councils and boards appropriate to the candidate’s area of expertise. The candidate should ultimately be recognized as a knowledgeable partner who can provide reliable information and build research-informed networks to address fruit and vegetable processing issues in the state of California.

 

Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in Food Science or other closely related discipline is required. Additionally, knowledge, experience, interest and/or academic coursework related to food processing and engineering, food chemistry, and plant sciences is highly desired. The successful candidate must have a record that documents productivity in research as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals.

 

Salary: Commensurate with experience.
