Three (3) Assistant/Associate Professors in Marine and Maritime Studies (Tenure Track) Åbo Akademi University, Faculty of Science and Engineering

Three (3) Assistant/Associate Professors in Marine and Maritime Studies (Tenure Track)

Åbo Akademi University is an internationally acknowledged research university with an extensive responsibility for providing education in Swedish in Finland. The activities cover research and education in most disciplines from natural sciences and technology, humanities, pedagogics and theology, to business and social sciences.

Åbo Akademi University invites applications for three (3) positions as Assistant/Associate professors in Marine and Maritime Studies through Tenure Track.

The three major areas included in this profiling area ‘The Sea’ encompasses environmental and marine biology, public administration and governance, and industrial management. Two of the positions are located at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, and one position is at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Business, and Economics. Appointments are expected to begin during 2018. The tenure track system at Åbo Akademi University offers an appointee to an assistant or associate professorship the opportunity to obtain a tenured position and advancement to a full professorship, i.e. the highest level of the tenure track system.

The three appointed Assistant/Associate Professors will form the backbone of Åbo Akademi University’s research profile in Marine and Maritime studies (‘The Sea’), which is the most recent strategic expansion based on a major grant from the Academy of Finland. The grant foresees the establishment of three new Assistant/Associate tenure track Professorships which, after successful attainment of individually set goals, will lead to full Professorships. At the same time, Åbo Akademi University is recruiting visiting Professors who will support and further strengthen the profile.

We are especially interested in candidates with interdisciplinary profiles. The appointed Assistant/Associate Professors will be expected to work together within the marine and maritime studies profiling area, and to explore possibilities for joint interdisciplinary research projects. Administratively, the appointees will be members of the two aforementioned faculties. They are, in combination with other measures, expected to position Åbo Akademi University as an internationally leading institution in interdisciplinary cutting-edge research in the area of marine and maritime studies. This research profiling area aims at shaping and developing current strengths within the fields of natural sciences and engineering, and economics and social sciences at Åbo Akademi University.
