This project aims to use monooxygenase biocatalysts for the sustainable manufacture of lactone monomers and novel lactone-based polymers for healthcare applications. The project is collaboration between the University of Manchester, University College London and the University of Bristol.

The project will lead to the development of new lactone monomers and novel polymers with improved properties and novel applications, especially in the healthcare arena. Biodegradable poly-lactone materials derived from petrochemical routes are already used widely in industry (speciality polyurethanes, additives and plasticisers), dentistry (as Resilon composites in splints and fillings) and healthcare (scaffolds for tissue engineering, drug delivery, bio-adhesives and orthopaedic castings). The sustainable production of monomers for these and related polymers is likely to impact in these areas, especially in the healthcare and dentistry markets where high quality/low volume products are sought.

Access to existing and novel monomers with improved performance and functionality from sustainable feedstocks has the potential to transform polymer production for these markets by providing sustainable routes to their production and subsequent elaboration of their properties through chemical/biological diversification.

The School of Chemistry is strongly committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN Charter for gender equality in higher education.
