The Department of Wind Energy in the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Wind Energy) is seeking a PhD for the Integration and Planning Section (INP).

Our research is function oriented in the sense that we direct the research towards issues that are relevant for industrial development and applications, and we work in projects with system integration, control concepts for wind turbines, wind power plants, electrical components, grid connection and large-scale wind energy penetration.

InnoDC is a European Training Network (ETN) funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions programme. ETNs provide training through doctoral research to talented early stage researchers (ESRs). InnoDC ESRs will enrol on PhD degree programmes and be employed for 36 months in a network of universities and industry with expertise in offshore wind power generation and supply. Through 15 ESR research projects, InnoDC will address the technical challenges linked to the development of offshore grids and hybrid AC/DC systems. 


 
This is a unique opportunity to study for a doctoral degree in a network of wind power and power systems experts from academia and industry. We are therefore looking for high qualified and motivated candidates with the skills, background knowledge and enthusiasm to help the network make important research breakthroughs.

  • The appointed researchers can be of any nationality and must have the necessary academic skills and background (electrical engineering, power systems, power electronics, renewable energy, optimization, control systems) to make the success of a doctoral degree.

  • Applicants are required to have completed Bachelor and Master studies before starting the work.

  • On the date they start work (aimed to be March 2018), researchers must not have lived in the country of the host organisation (see below) for more than 12 of the previous 36 months, must have less than four years’ full-time equivalent research experience and must not have a doctoral degree.

  • Researchers will be employed by the host organisation for 36 months.

  • The network offers the appointed researchers generous salaries (competitive salary plus allowances) and funding for technical and personal skills training and participation in international research events.

  • Researchers will develop both theoretical and applied work, and will be in close contact to real applications.

  • All researchers will participate in international secondments to other organisations in the InnoDC network and in outreach activities with audiences beyond the research community.

  • It is a requirement that network ESRs have an ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English to a level that is sufficiently high for them to derive full benefit from the network training.

  • Female candidates are especially encouraged to apply as women are underrepresented in this field of research.

 

Responsibilities and tasks 

 

The PhD project focuses on the development of suitable control strategies for clusters of offshore wind power plants (OWPP).

 

The main objective is to first analyse the challenges that can arise when several wind power plants, with wind turbines from different manufacturers, are connected to the same large HVDC converter (both VSC and diode-rectifier solutions). Secondly, the study will develop methods for implementing coordinated and synchronized active power control and reactive power management in the wind cluster.

 

The main research tasks:

  • Develop OWPP cluster model including generic representation of wind turbines

  • Implement and analyse cluster supervisory controller for coordinated and synchronized active power control

  • Implement and analyse cluster supervisory controller for reactive power management, both in normal and fault operation

  • Evaluation of stability and robustness of the chosen solutions

 

Qualifications

 

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in Electrical Engineering / Power Electronics / Power Engineering. Good knowledge of wind power plant and HVDC technology is considered an advantage.

 

Approval and Enrolment 

 

The scholarship for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Salary and appointment terms

 

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

 

The period of employment is 3 years.
