Position Description

Job Details: 


This job will involve lab, greenhouse, and field activities that contribute to team-driven research projects. The successful applicant will be responsible for leading a project contributing to sustainable management of Prunus replant disease, as well as supporting other researchers with related projects. The incumbent will also assist in screening nut tree rootstocks for resistance to Phytophthora and processing diagnostic samples from orchards throughout California. Specific duties of the position include establishing and managing greenhouse, lab, and field trials; isolating microbes from plant tissue and soil; extracting nucleic acids from complex samples; collecting and analyzing plant data; producing libraries for high-throughput sequencing; analyzing high-throughput sequencing data; and producing publication-quality figures. The incumbent will be expected to summarize project progress and findings for meetings, as well as coordinate project goals and timelines between Browne lab and its collaborators. This position also includes responsibility for training and mentoring undergraduate student assistants. As the position progresses, it is expected that the incumbent will participate in the development of manuscripts and grant proposals, and there may be opportunities to present project results at professional meetings.


The Browne lab is committed to the development of sustainable, practical management strategies for soilborne diseases of fruit and nut trees. Lab team projects include determining the etiology of emerging diseases, developing and optimizing soil-amendment-based control strategies for soilborne diseases, and developing walnut and Prunus rootstocks that resist key soilborne pathogens. 


Qualifications:



This position requires a minimum of a B.S., or equivalent degree, in a biological science; knowledge, interest, and general experience in the following: plant pathology; plant science (e.g., plant propagation, greenhouse and orchard care of fruit and nut tree species, plant growth and yield assessment); techniques used in molecular biology (e.g., nucleic acid extraction and purification; PCR; gene cloning; DNA sequence analysis); and biometrics (e.g., analysis of variance). It is expected that the position will involve intensive on-the-job training.
