PhD student in Organic Photochemistry

Sort by publication: 2017-11-16

Uppsala University is a broad research university with a strong international position. The task is to conduct research and education of the highest quality and to cooperate in different ways with society. Our most important asset is all the individuals who, with their curiosity and commitment, make Uppsala University one of the country's most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 40,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of 6.5 billion.

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The institution has more than 300 active persons, of which 175 are employed and the rest consists of visiting researchers and students.

Description: We are now looking for a PhD student at Henrik Ottosson's research group , one of five research groups in the newly established unit for Synthetic Molecular Chemistry (SMC) at Chemistry - Ångström. At the SMC, research is conducted in the border between molecular inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry, with a wide range of physical chemistry.

The research in the Ottosson group focuses on organic photochemistry with particular focus on applications of aromaticity and antiaromaticity in electronically excited states in accordance with Baird's rule (see Chem. Rev. 2014, 114, 5379). The group performs both experimental and computational chemistry, and has an extensive network of collaborations, mainly with other academic groups, even recently with industry. Research on Baird's rule has historically been fundamental, but the Ottosson group's ambition is to use the rule as a tool for the development of new chemistry with different applications.

Tasks: The PhD student will work in a project aimed at developing efficient photochemical coupling reactions that utilize (anti) aromaticity in excited states, and with which one can couple small hydrocarbons from bioresal products to longer potentially being included as fossil-free components in lubricating oils. The project thus bridges between elementary and applied chemistry, and will be carried out in close collaboration with researchers at Avantherm AB, a start-up company in Stockholm. The research will largely focus on reaction optimization and may involve reactor scales larger than the laboratory scale.

Qualifications: At the start date, the applicant must have obtained a Masters degree in Chemistry, a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering or a corresponding degree with a focus on experimental organic chemistry, ideally in organic photochemistry, radical chemistry or adjacent fields. The focus will be on personal qualities; We are looking for a person with good cooperation and communication skills that can work efficiently and independently. The applicant should have excellent knowledge in English, both in writing and in speech, and have an interest in working in both an academic and an industrial environment.

Application: The application must be written in English. The applicant with the appropriate qualifications submits ( i ) a letter with a description of the research interests and the reasons why they are suitable for the service; ( ii ) CV containing a brief description of experience and expertise and a list of possible publications; ( iii ) a copy of certificate of qualification and grades, ( iv ) names and contact details of three reference persons with a description of how they relate to the applicant.

Salary : According to local agreement (Local collective agreement for PhD students and students)

Access: 2018-02-01 or by appointment
