Research Fellow in the Laboratory of Bacterial Natural Products National University of Singapore, Faculty of Science (FoS)

Research Fellow - 0071U

Description

  • Research in a laboratory of bacterial natural products
  • Description of research:
  1. Genome mining for new natural product antibiotics. Detection, isolation, and characterization of bacterial derived natural products. Selected strains of bacteria will be subjected to in silico analysis for natural product gene clusters. The products from these gene clusters will be detected by Raman microspectroscopy, LC-MS, NMR, etc. The detected products will be purified to homogeneity and the structures determined by NMR and chemical methods. The products will be tested for biological activity against clinically relevant pathogens. Selected enzymes involved in these pathways will be cloned and expressed in a heterologous host such as E. coli. The products from in vivo or in vitro assays will be detected and analyzed by chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques (HPLC, LC-MS, NMR, etc.)
  • Training of fellows, students, and interns
  • Operational support in the running and maintenance of equipment

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree holder in relevant areas related to Chemistry or Biology.
  • A solid background in either natural products chemistry and or analytical chemistry is essential. The ability to purify a small molecule from a complex mixture. Sound experience with HPLC and mass spectrometry. The ability to characterize an unknown molecular structure by spectroscopic techniques (NMR, mass spectrometry, chemical synthesis). Work with Raman microspectroscopy or other nano/micro-spectroscopic techniques is a plus.
  • In addition the ideal candidate will have some experience in molecular biology and or biochemistry, preferably worked on natural product or similar pathways in the past. Techniques in cloning and expression in E. coli or other bacteria is ideal.
  • Good grounding in scientific knowledge and lab skills to offer technical support, advice and trouble shooting.
  • Having prior working experience in similar appointment or environment is preferred, but candidates with no research fellow experience are also welcome to apply.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English and good interpersonal skills.
  • Highly motivated, able to multi-task and flexible to accepting new roles.
