Description



The Research Assistant (RA) will work in an academic research laboratory that focuses on the field of medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. The principle investigator is interested in the design, synthesis and biological evaluation of organic heterocyclic molecules that have the potential to interfere with the growth of Mycobacterium species of bacteria. This family of bacteria is known to cause tuberculosis and other non-tuberculous lung diseases.



The Research Assistant shall be expected to

 

  • conduct organic synthesis and analysis of heterocyclic molecules
  • manage a laboratory safety management system and hold appointment as lab safety lead
  • assist in purchasing and stock taking of chemicals and solvents
  • assist in mentorship of students in the laboratory to minimize lab hazards

 

There will be opportunity to learn new laboratory techniques such as enzyme inhibition assay, cell viability evaluation and computer-aided molecular modeling.



Qualifications



The applicant is required to

 

  • possess a Bachelor degree in Science with major in Chemistry or Bachelor degree in Pharmaceutical Science
  • have experience in skills for organic synthesis and chemical analysis
  • have experience in literature search
  • have basic knowledge in chemical safety
  • have good spoken and written communication skills
  • have an interest in learning more about drug discovery
