Tier II Canada Research Chair in Indigenous
Environmental Studies/Science

Trent University invites applications from scholars with a strong research profile for a Tier II
Canada Research Chair (CRC) in the emerging field of Indigenous Environmental
Studies/Science.

Indigenous Environmental Studies/Science (IESS) at Trent University is an innovative and
multidisciplinary program jointly offered by the Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies
and the Trent School of the Environment. Teaching and research in the IESS program brings
together principles and knowledge from Indigenous knowledge and Western science
(www.trentu.ca/ies). IESS invites applications for a CRC Tier II position from individuals with a
strong record of scholarship in fields that pertain to areas of IESS research. These may include,
but are not limited to, Natural Resource Stewardship, Resource Development and Land
Restoration with Indigenous Nations/communities, Traditional Indigenous Foods, Plants and
Medicines, and Sustainability Planning for Indigenous Nations/communities with consideration
for key issues such as water and climate change, Environmental Law and Policy, Jurisdiction and
Governance for Indigenous Sovereignty. Candidates must have a demonstrated ability in multi or
interdisciplinary, cross-cultural research, as well as the capacity to develop productive
collaborations with colleagues in the Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies and the
Trent School of the Environment in areas of local, national or global significance. In addition,
they should have the ability to collaborate with colleagues outside of academia in Indigenous
communities, governments, NGOs and private sector organizations.

The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in science, social science or interdisciplinary studies
related to the environment, health, Indigenous studies or a related field. The candidate will have
a strong multi-disciplinary background, and the demonstrated potential to lead in their field and
attract competitively awarded research funding. Successful candidates are expected to develop a
personal, externally funded five-year research plan within an institutional context of active
collaboration. It is expected that the candidate will teach one or more courses in the
undergraduate degree programs and supervise graduate students in one or more graduate
programs. Trent University graduate programs (MA, MSc and PhD) that include IESS related
research include Environmental and Life Sciences, Sustainability Studies, Canadian Studies and
Indigenous Studies.

For more than 50 years, Trent has been nationally recognized as one of the top Indigenous and
Environmental post-secondary institutions and has acted to consolidate and highlight its capacity
in the form of two schools, The Chanie Wenjack School for Indigenous Studies, and The Trent
School of the Environment (TSE). It is committed to building on its strengths to become the
university of choice for future Indigenous and allied environmental leaders. Facilities and
initiatives available to our researchers and students include the 1400-acre campus, the First
Peoples House of Learning, TRACKS Youth Outreach Program, the Nasivvik Centre for Inuit
health and changing environments, the experimental farm, extensive wet and dry laboratory
facilities, and the Trent Water Quality Centre, to name a few. In addition, Trent is located in the
Mississauga Traditional Territory of the Anishinaabe Nation in 50km proximity to five First
Nations of Treaty 20.

Tier II Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have less
than 10 years of experience as an active researcher in their field at the time of nomination).
Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where
career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may
have their eligibility for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program’s Tier II justification
process. Please consult the Canada Research Chairs website for full program information,
including further details on eligibility requirements.

A Tier II CRC nomination will be submitted soon after a successful candidate has been selected.
CRCs are awarded by the CRC Secretariat in Ottawa after a rigorous evaluation, and awards are
expected to be announced in the fall of 2018. The Trent appointment will be conditional on a
successful CRC nomination.

Applicants should submit electronically by December 15th, 2017 a curriculum vitae, an outline of
research interests and plans, copies of 3 recent research publications, and names and contact
information of three references who have agreed to provide letters of recommendation to: Cathy
Gates, Director, Office of Research, Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario, K9L 0G2, Canada.
