The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Gothenburg (http://cmb.gu.se/english) conducts high quality research and education in three main areas: biomolecular sciences, fundamental chemical sciences and environmental sciences. Our research stretches all the way from the atomic and molecular scale, to cells and organisms, and further to the global scale. Many of the phenomena we study illustrate the chemical and biological interactions between molecules in our natural environment and in living systems. The Department has around 60 researchers and teachers, and about 75 students are active within the framework of doctoral education.

The Department is responsible for the degree programs in chemistry, organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry, molecular biology, genomics and systems biology, and pharmacy education. We also teach in programs for biology, atmospheric science, environmental science and marine sciences as well as in the training of pharmacists, teachers and civil engineers. The Department also has extensive contacts with industry and society.

Subject area

Biophysical Chemistry

Subject area description

The position as Assistant Professor (in Swedish “forskarassistent”; equivalent to a junior group leader) in Biophysical Chemistry has a special focus on time-resolved infrared spectroscopy.

Job assignments

We are looking for a candidate who will build an independent research program in the fields of time-resolved infrared spectroscopy, applied to proteins, functional materials, or other samples. A functional femtosecond infrared spectroscope exists, which you ideally use and further develop in your research projects. You will also have the opportunity to take part in collaborative projects with the group leader, Professor Sebastian Westenhoff.

You are expected to attract external funding for your own activities and to build up an independent research program. Your will be provided with a start-up package for this purpose, which includes funding for a PhD student, access to the femtosecond laser facility, and a very productive laboratory for biochemistry and structural biology.

You are also expected to teach (around 10-20% of the position) in chemistry.

The successful candidate is expected to teach in Swedish within two years.

Candidates without university teacher training should undergo courses in teaching and learning in higher education within two years of employment.

Eligibility

Qualified for appointment as Assistant Professor (forskarassistent) is a person who has been awarded a PhD degree, an equivalent foreign degree or has achieved equivalent academic qualifications. Priority should be given to candidates who have been awarded a PhD, an equivalent foreign degree or achieved equivalent qualifications no more than seven years before the application deadline. Candidates who graduated earlier may also be given primary consideration if there are special reasons. Special reasons are considered to be a leave of absence due to illness or parental leave for example. Reason, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with the relevant documentation.

An additional requirement is the ability to teach in Swedish or English.

Assessment

The assessment of applications will first and foremost be based on scientific proficiency, and secondly on pedagogical merits. Both will be assessed with the same care.

The scientific proficiency is assessed through well-documented scientific competence, including publications in leading international journals, research relevant for the subject area of the position, and skills in time-resolved laser spectroscopy. Scientific proficiency is also assessed through indicated scientific independence. Signs of independence are, for example, to have attracted research funding, to have successfully led or worked in collaborations, and to have devised and implemented research projects. Scientific proficiency is also assessed on the basis of the scientific quality of the submitted research plan, where we would like to see high-risk, high-gain questions to be addressed.

The pedagogical merits are assessed through well-documented pedagogical experience, which includes the ability of planning and performing teaching and successfully supervise master and bachelor students.

When appointing a member of faculty, the candidate who after the overall assessment of proficiency and future capacity is considered to have the best ability to perform the intended duties, collaborate with others and contribute to a positive development of the department, is to be chosen.

Personal circumstances (e.g. parental leave) are taken into account in the assessment of qualifications, and must be specified in the presentation of credentials and experiences.

Employment

Type of employment: Fixed-term employment, 48 months/four years
Extent: 100%
Location: Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology, Gothenburg
First day of employment: As soon as possible

Appointment procedure

The selection process will include evaluation by experts from outside the department, interviews, and/or research seminars. Personal circumstances (e.g. parental leave) will be taken into account in the assessment of qualifications and specified in relation to qualifications and experience.
