The Department of Biological and Environmental Science, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science is currently seeking to recruit staff to a position of


Professor of Evolutionary Genetics, starting 1st January 2019 or as agreed in effect until further notice.


Research of the Department of Biological and Environmental Science belongs to the University’s denoted core research activity field of basic natural phenomena and mathematical thinking. The research in the Department focuses on three main areas: evolutionary biology, natural resources and environment, and biological nanoscience. In these areas the department has many ongoing experimental research projects using wide range of study organisms including microbes, insects, birds, plants, fish and small mammals that are studied both in the field and laboratory. Modern genetics and molecular biology methods are used in many of these projects. The department has excellent instrumentation for molecular genetics, including digital and quantitative PCR equipments, and next generation and Sanger sequencers. Konnevesi research station, experimental ecology laboratories and modern greenhouses give cutting-edge facilities for experimental research. In addition the Department provides advanced imaging techniques including optical microscopy as well as electron microscopy and helium ion microscopy. A large set of chemical analytical instruments is available, as well as cell culture facilities and biosafety level 2 facilities. The Department has direct access to all facilities at the Nanoscience center of the University of Jyväskylä.


The professorship has been established to promote scientific research and education in evolutionary genetics. The expertise and research interests of the professor are expected to be strategically complementary to existing research within the Department. Competitive candidates will demonstrate an ability to develop independent and vigorous research programs. Applications by investigators capable of applying theoretical concepts in empirical and experimental evolutionary genetics of any organism in the following areas of research are encouraged: population, functional or evolutionary genomics, comparative evolutionary genetics and developmental biology, or molecular processes underlying population adaptations. The candidate is expected to supervise and develop laboratory facilities in genetics and genomics at the department.


The professor is expected to establish a vigorous, externally funded research program and enthusiastically lead the undergraduate and graduate teaching missions in the areas of bioinformatics, genetics, population genetics and molecular genetics. The applicant should have a good command of the modern experimental and computational methods in the field. In addition, the professor is expected to participate in the field´s societal interactions.

The job-specific salary component of a professor is based on the job demands level 8-11 according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46.3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.
