The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,800 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics.

Within the Faculty of Applied Sciences, the section Materials for Energy Conversion and Storage (MECS) develops new materials for sustainable energy applications. Current research activities include hydrogen sensors, photocatalysis and electrochemistry for the sustainable production of hydrocarbons.

The section Fundamental Aspects of Materials and Energy (FAME) performs research on functional and structural materials. To study materials at the atomic and nanoscale we use neutrons, positrons, X-rays, NMR, muons, Mossbauer spectroscopy and first principles modeling, at both local (RID) and international facilities.


Job description

In this project we will develop a thin film solid state electrolyte based on the conduction of negative H-ions. Such electrolytes may play a key role in future electrochemical conversion processes. Since solid electrolytes are usually acidic the development of alkaline electrolytes enlarges the range of compatible catalysts. Key to this project is the development of a reproducible sputter deposition method of such thin films at the MECS department, and their characterization by Nuclear Methods (muSR, neutron reflectometry, positron annihilation spectroscopy) at the FAME department of the Faculty of Applied Science. Furthermore, the electronic and ionic mobility properties will be investigated using impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical conversion devices. An in-depth analysis of the local structural properties and mobility will be carried out in close collaboration with a second PhD candidate who is based at the Radboud University in Nijmegen and focusses on the solid state NMR analysis and the computational simulation thereof. 



You have a recently completed master degree in Materials Science, Physical Chemistry or Condensed Matter Physics, preferably with a focus on defect properties and/or structural analysis. You have excellent academic qualifications and a passion for materials research. Strong experimental as well as communicative skills and a pioneering mentality are essential for this project.
