Associate Senior University Lecturer in Medical Radiation Physics Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Clinical Sciences, division of Radiation Physics Sweden

Lund University, Faculty of Science, Department of Clinical Sciences, division of Radiation Physics

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has 40 000 students and 7 400 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

The Faculty of Science conducts research and education within Biology, Astronomy, Physics, Geosciences, Chemistry, Mathematics and Environmental Sciences. The Faculty is organized into nine departments, gathered in the northern campus area. The Faculty has approximately 1500 students, 330 PhD students and 700 employees.

Medical Radiation Physics is a subject that includes research and teaching in both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and its use mainly in medical applications. The major areas are radiation therapy, x-ray diagnostics, nuclear medicine including both diagnostics and therapy, as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). All of these areas include dosimetry- and health aspects. The research activities are highly clinical oriented and often in close cooperation with clinical medical physicists and physicians, employed by Region Skåne. An important part of the department's activities is the medical physics education, which is a 5-year regulated vocational education leading to a certification to work clinically as a medical physicist. In order to maintain a high quality in this education, a synergy between research and education is of the utmost importance, and all our teachers are therefore engaged in this education. In addition to teaching in the field of medical physics, the department has well-established courses in the LTH "Biomedical Engineering program" as well as courses on radiation-related education of x-ray nurses. The Department of Medical Radiation Physics belongs to both the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine.

Type of employment

Limit of tenure, 6 years, according to chapter 4, section12a of the Higher Education Ordinance, with the opportunity to promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Job description

Employment as Associate Senior Lecture is a career development position, where the holder is to be given the opportunity to develop his or her independence as a researcher and educator.

The duties of the position are research and development in the field of tomographic reconstruction of medical images. This is an expansive research area with applications in most of the research areas represented in medical radiation physics, eg. nuclear medicine, x-ray and external radiation therapy. The methods is also important in the development of pre-clinical imaging systems. The competence in this field of research has been steadily declining nationally, while international development and clinical needs have seen a steady increase. To successfully conduct such research, the applicant's mathematical skills should be good and well documented e.g. by course certificate or scientific publications. Furthermore, the applicant should have good skills in computer programming.

The position involves a majority of the time should be dedicated for research. In the position is also expected teaching, which today is about 10-20% of a full time appointment counted over the whole period, and above this, the applicant could expect to be appointed to other institutional duties. The teaching will concern different areas of the departments undergraduate medical physics education as well as the postgraduate education and, when appropriate,  course developments. Supervision of PhD students and master's degree thesis work will also be an important part. The content of the work assignments, as well as the distribution and relation between research and teaching, may change over time.

The employee is expected to to establish his/her own active research activities within the subject area and related subjects, which also involves an active effort to seek external funding for the research projects. In addition, it is considered important that the applicant can develop collaborations with other units within the university, health care or organizations working with similar research topics, nationally as well as internationally.

Eligibility

A person who holds a PhD or has the corresponding research expertise shall be qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their degree no more than five years before the last date for applications. A person who has obtained a PhD or the equivalent expertise earlier may be eligible if there are special grounds. Special grounds include leave due to illness, parental leave or other similar circumstances.

Basis of Assessment

A good ability to develop and carry out high-quality research and teaching skill.
The main assessment bases are scientific and educational skills, of which greater importance is attached to scientific skill.

Requirements for the position:

  • Doctoral degree in the field of medical radiation physics or equivalent subject area.
  • A scientific skill in the subject field, obtained through a documented postdoctoral research activity equivalent to at least two years.
  • Very good programming skills.
  • Proven good mathematical skills and preparedness to handle complex problems.
  • Good knowledge of English and good communication skills.
  • Applicants should have an interest in teaching and have the necessary knowledge that is needed to teach in other areas of the medical physics undergraduate education than in their own special research area.

Merits for the position:

  • Medical physics education with certification.
  • The research group uses IDL and Fortran as their main programming languages. We therefore like to see that the applicant has extensive experience in these or similar programming languages.
  • Documented experience of collaboration with other research groups, both nationally and internationally,
  • Documented good collaborative skills is also an important basis for assessment.
  • The ability to independently plan, develop and carry out education at both basic and advanced levels is also a merit.

A great deal of importance will be attached to how the applicant through his experience and competence can be assessed to supplement and strengthen both research and education of medical physics at the Department of Medical Radiation Physics. This can be demonstrated, for example, by showing an independent research plan that describes how the applicant's research enhances research at the institution and in which research environments the applicant could develop collaborations.

As it is regulated that the teaching of the medical physics education is to be conducted in Swedish, it is expected that a non-Swedish-language applicant should be able to teach in Swedish no later than three years. This is also important for good communication with different bodies within the University and Health care.

When making the appointment, consideration will be given to the Lund University Appointment Rules.

Promotion
