POSTDOCTORAL POSITION: DEVELOPMENT OF ULTRA-LOW ENERGY ION IMPLANTATION (10-200 EV) FOR MODIFICATION OF SURFACES AND 2D MATERIALS

You will be part of the Institute for Nuclear and Radiation Physics (IKS), at the department of Physics and Astronomy of the KU Leuven. You will join several other postdoctoral researchers, PhD students and staff carrying out experimental research on solid state physics and nuclear physics. You will have access to a wide range of in-house experimental facilities (e.g. the ion and molecular beam laboratory https://fys.kuleuven.be/iks/nvsf/experimental-facilities), international large-scale facilities (e.g. the ISOLDE facility at CERN), and a network of leading international ion beam institutes.
 

Responsibilities

Your project will consist of developing next-generation approaches to ultra-low energy ion implantation (10-200 eV), for application in the field of modification of surfaces and 2D materials.

  • You will be introduced to the ongoing research.
  • You will contribute with your own expertise and will receive additional training.
  • You will carry out research at the highest international standards.
  • You will contribute to the supervision of PhD and MSc students and other training tasks.
  • You will contribute to the development of new projects.
  • You will have the opportunity to develop independent research.
 

Profile

  • You hold a PhD in Physics or Engineering.
  • You are experienced with ion-beam optics (design, simulation, implementation, testing), particularly in the low-energy regime (starting from beams with tens of keV, electrostatic deceleration to sub-keV, ion beam cooling…).
  • Experience with any of the following simulation software/packages is advantageous: SIMION, COMSOL, Geant4, Wintrax, or related.
  • Experience with ion source development (design, simulation, implementation, testing) is advantageous.
  • Experience with the following fields/techniques is advantageous: ultra-high vacuum technology, surface science and technology, ion implantation.
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language (spoken and written).
  • Resourceful, ambitious and internationally oriented.
  • Capability to work in a team as well as independently, problem-solving attitude.
 

Offer

We offer a full-time postdoctoral research position, for one year, extendable to up to 5 years.
