Position Overview

The Department of Physics is seeking a Research Fellow to join an ongoing Marsden funded project. This is fixed-term until February 2020.

The main purpose of this role is to design and build instrumentation for distributed optical sensing of temperature and strain. The aim is to develop instrumentation that can be used in remote sites to monitor the Alpine fault that runs along the length of the South Island in NZ. This work is a collaboration with geophysicists from Victoria University Wellington and will involve travel both to Wellington and to the drill site on the South Island.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • a Ph.D. in Optical Fibre Sensing
  • ideally, three or more years' experience working with optical fibres and photonic systems
  • knowledge of strain and techniques for measuring strain and temperature remotely, with ability to splice fibres and general experience with photonic devices
  • excellent skills in writing, communicating and presenting scientific results to international audience.
