PostdoctoralPosition in Antihydrogen Spectroscopy Aarhus University, Department of Physics and Astronomy Denmark

PostdoctoralPosition in Antihydrogen Spectroscopy

The ALPHA experiment at CERN has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral candidat. The position, financed by an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council, is for one year. The intended start date is early as possible.

The focus of the research program will be the ongoing experimental effort on spectroscopy on trapped antihydrogen atoms, with concentration on the 243 nm laser system for the 1S-2S transition. Candidates must have a recent (within the last five years) PhD in physics.

Preference will be given to outstanding candidates having experience involving laser interactions with trapped atoms or ions. Knowledge of and experience with cryogenic and UHV systems is also required. Experience with highly stabilised, ultraviolet, continuous wave lasers is also sought.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in all aspects of the collaboration’s experimental program at the Antiproton Decelerator at CERN. This includes operation of the ALPHA-2 antihydrogen trap and involves rotating shift work, as the experiment is manned around the clock.

We seek dedicated, self-motivated individuals who wish to make an immediate impact on a highly visible experiment.

The place of work will be CERN in Genava, Switzerland, and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments.

Formal employment will be with the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus University.

Interested candidates should send their CV and a brief statement of their qualifications and research interest.

Please include the names and contact email addresses for three references, but do not ask for letters of reference to be sent at this time.

For more information please contact Professor Jeffrey Hangst, Spokesperson, the ALPHA Collaboration at CERN: jeffrey.hangst@cern.ch

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Guidelines for applicants can be found here.

Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Further information on qualification requirements and job content may be found in the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Danish Universities. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.

All interested candidates are encouraged to apply, regardless of their personal background. Research activities will be evaluated in relation to actual research time. Thus, we encourage applicants to specify periods of leave without research activities, in order to be able to subtract these periods from the span of the scientific career during the evaluation of scientific productivity.
