1 PhD Position in the field of Cold Controllled Collision Dynamics
Part-time position (75 %), Start-date: At the earliest possible date.

A detailed understanding of the underlying dynamical processes in discharge and plasma environments is crucial for the development of novel sources of energetic radiation, and for a better understanding of the Earth’s upper atmosphere. Moreover, an in-depth knowledge of collision dynamics is the first step towards the development of unconventional means to steer the outcome of chemical reactions.

The PhD project will include the study of collision dynamics at very low collision energies, where quantum effects strongly modulate the reaction rate. To reach the cold collision regime, we are combining molecular beam methods and laser cooling techniques for the production of ultracold atoms (Li-MOT, laser cooling of He atoms).

We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in experimental Atomic and Molecular Physics or Physical Chemistry. Experience in the use of lasers and high-vacuum equipment is advantageous.

The PhD programme, a collaboration with the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada, offers dual supervision by researchers from both universities and an extended research stay at the UBC.
