The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBE) at the University of California, Berkeley, seeks applications for a non-senate position as academic coordinator II at 30% effort with an expected start date of August 19, 2020. The Department consistently ranks among the top research and teaching programs in the country and continues to be at the forefront in emerging areas of chemical and biomolecular engineering and technology. Creative and energetic individuals who show extraordinary promise or accomplishment in program management and academic curriculum are encouraged to apply.

The academic coordinator II will oversee the College of Chemistry program for academic-year undergraduate research experiences. This program serves undergraduate students in the college and serves local companies, especially start-up companies, seeking part-time research contributions from undergraduates through a synergistic relationship. The coordinator’s duties include the following,

• The coordinator works actively and independently to seek partners in industry and national labs for the program and coordinates advertising the opening positions with the webmaster.
• The coordinator keeps a list of potential partners and opportunities.
• The coordinator will facilitate matching specific internship positions with faculty sponsors and will occasionally serve as a sponsor to student researchers. This will likely require asking for volunteers to help review applications twice a year.
• The coordinator works with a contact in the College of Engineering, which shares the opportunities available through this program.
• The coordinator will continue developing and refining this program, as it is in its first year of implementation. It is possible that it will be difficult to convince faculty to sponsor students in these types of projects; creative problem solving may be necessary in this case. The coordinator will manage the program with a great amount of independence and will seek general guidance from the department chair.

As the program grows, more partnerships are anticipated, and student interest is expected to grow as the program becomes more broadly known. More coordination may become necessary.

Basic qualifications: PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application.

Additional qualifications: Ph.D or equivalent international degree. Additional qualifications must be met by date of hire.

The department is committed to addressing the family needs of its employees, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.

To apply for consideration, application materials should be submitted electronically through our web-based system at: Letters of reference may be solicited for finalists. Interviewing will begin in early August, and early application is encouraged. If you would like to receive more information, please contact Jamie Eagan at The position will remain open until filled.

All recommendation letters will be treated as confidential per University of California policy and California state law. Please refer potential referees, including when letters are provided via a third party (i.e., dossier service or career center), to the UC Berkeley statement of confidentiality ( prior to submitting their letters.
