The University is Finland’s leading expert in teacher education and adult education, as well as the major exporter of education. The Faculty of Sport Sciences is the only one in the country. The University of Jyväskylä is known for its dynamic operating culture and strong commitment to social responsibility.

The Department of Chemistry, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science is currently seeking to recruit staff to the position of

Doctoral student in chemistry, for a fixed four-year term, starting January 1, 2018 or as agreed.

The computational biomolecular dynamics group is looking for a highly motivated scientist to investigate how biological motors work by means of advanced molecular dynamics simulation techniques. Ultimately, we want to use the insights from the simulations to design artificial motors that operate according to the same principles. As we will address the research questions in this project in close collaboration with the groups of Siewert-Jan Marrink at the University of Groningen (coarse grained modeling), Berk Hess at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (new simulation method) and Gunnar Schröder at the Forschungzentrum Jülich (structure refinement), the selected candidates will regularly visit their labs to work with them. The interdisciplinary project offers opportunities for those interested in large-scale application and/or development of advanced simulation methods.

The eligible candidate for the Doctoral student position should have, or be about to obtain, a MSc degree in physics or physical chemistry. The ideal candidate will have experience in statistical mechanics or molecular dynamics simulations.

The tasks of a Doctoral student focus on research concerning doctoral thesis, doctoral studies, assisting teaching tasks and other tasks connected to these tasks.

Qualification requirements, duties and language competence requirements for a Doctoral student are in accordance with the University of Jyväskylä Regulations. According to Finnish law, a non-native university teaching and research staff member can be granted an exemption from the requirement of Finnish language proficiency.
