The Department of Chemistry, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science is currently seeking to recruit staff to

1-2 Doctoral students in chemistry, for a fixed four-year term, starting 1st of January but no later than 1st of February 2018.


The successful candidates will work on halogen bonding projects lead by Professor Kari Rissanen and Dr. Arto Valkonen. She or he is expected to have M.Sc. in organic, inorganic or supramolecular chemistry or crystal engineering. The candidates are expected to have basic synthetic and analytical organic chemistry skills. More advanced knowledge and skills in single crystal X-ray diffraction or in NMR fundamentals, as well as, in re-crystallization techniques or in modern analytical organic chemistry methods is considered as a benefit. We look for a highly motivated PhD students interested in structural characterization of novel supramolecular complexes driven by intermolecular interactions.


The tasks of a Doctoral student focus on research concerning doctoral thesis, doctoral studies, assisting teaching tasks and other tasks connected to these tasks.


Qualification requirements, duties and language competence requirements for a Doctoral student are in accordance with the University of Jyväskylä Regulations. According to Finnish law, a non-native university teaching and research staff member can be granted an exemption from the requirement of Finnish language proficiency. Good skills in written and spoken English will be essential for the successful completion of the PhD degree.


Doctoral student must have a Master’s degree and permission for post-graduate studies in the University of Jyväskylä. If the applicant does not have permission for post-graduate studies in the University of Jyväskylä, it must be applied with a separate application procedure from the proper faculty.


The job-specific salary component of a Doctoral student is based on the job demands level 1-4 (EUR 1 808,42 – 2 475,31 / month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46.3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.


A trial period of four months will be used when the position is first filled.
