The post sits within the Applied Photonics theme of the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences (IPaQS) at Heriot-Watt University.  IPaQS is one of 5 Research Institutes in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, and carries out a broad range of world-leading research in photonic physics, engineering photonics and quantum sciences.  Specifically, the post is associated with the Applied Photonics manufacturing-focused research, which has at its core the Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Laser-based Production Processes, a 5-university Centre with >30 industrial collaborators.

This school-funded 4 year fixed term fellowship in the area of Applied Photonics (Manufacturing) is specifically designed for an experienced Research Associate/Fellow to develop an independent academic research career.  The candidate will be expected to develop proposals for external funding in order to develop their own research team, as a constituent part of the Applied Optics and Photonics Group.  Areas of research to be developed should be cognate with the Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Laser-based Production Processes.  Applicants are expected to demonstrate an excellent track record in research for their career stage, together with close links to relevant industrial and university partners.


Key duties and responsibilities

This post is primarily research-focused, although the post-holder will also be required to contribute to teaching activity within the school, and to become a full member of the relevant teaching group.  However the scale of teaching activity will reflect the research-focus of the role.  The post-holder will be provided with clear targets for income generation, via application for external research funding.  Provided that these targets are met, the post will transition into an open-ended Academic (Research and Teaching) position (nominally Assistant Professor) at the end of the 4 years.


In detail the postholder is required to:

? Develop independent research activity that is cognate with the Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Laser-based Production Processes
? Supervise PhD students and other students who may be assisting with the research
? Author research proposals, and submit for funding
? Prepare and edit scientific papers
? Present research findings at conferences
? Undertake teaching duties as required by the school, including lecture delivery, tutorials, lab demonstration, student project supervision.
? Participate in the broader work of the AOP Research Group, including industrial outreach e.g. at workshops, conferences or other meetings


Education, Qualifications and Experience
  • Minimum qualification: Doctorate


Essential Criteria

? Possess and maintain sufficient breadth and depth of specialist discipline knowledge, research methods and techniques to lead own research area.
? Hold a PhD together with postdoctoral experience
? Demonstrate leadership skills and experience
? Good publication record for stage in career.
? Ability to clearly articulate research work, both in technical reports / papers and by oral presentation
? Ability to formulate and progress work on own initiative
? Experience in leading the writing of peer-reviewed papers.
? Energy and enthusiasm for laser-based manufacturing industrially-focused research
? Capability to be self-directed and think innovatively.
? Previous experience of high power laser applications in manufacturing
? Evidence of ability to guide other researchers, e.g. PhD students and undergraduate project students.
Desirable Criteria
? Experience of authoring research proposals
? Experience of developing new industrial collaborations
? Experience of developing new academic collaborations
? Experience of university-level teaching
