Role Description


Introduction / The Role


The Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence, within the Department of Chemistry at the University of York has recently been awarded an Innovate UK grant to work on “A novel ultrafiltration process to extract valuable proteins from potato peelings and waste””, in collaboration with several industrial partners.


The overall vision and ultimate objective of this project is to scale up the process of potato protein extraction from out of specification potatoes and peelings to pilot scale so as to define the full process and explore the operating envelope.


The main duties of the role are to conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and to contribute to the production of research into the scale up the process of potato protein extraction from out of specification potatoes and peelings to pilot scale so as to define the full process and explore the operating envelope.


You will also contribute to the production of research outputs relating to this technology and assist in the identification and development of potential further areas of research.


The post is offered on a full-time basis (although applications for flexible or part-time working will be considered). The post is available for up to 21.5 months. The salary offered is £31,604 on Grade 6 of the University’s pay scales.


Key requirements


You will require a PhD in Chemistry or Green Chemistry and knowledge of green chemical technologies (hydrothermal microwave, sub-critical water, supercritical carbon dioxide, membrane separations) . You should also be familiar with a range of research techniques and methodologies for the characterisation of small molecules and proteins, e.g. HPLC, GPC, DSC, GC, GCMS, FT-IR, TGA, Proteomics (SDS Page and Maldi TOF-TOF), protein crystallography, anion exchange SEC


You should be willing to work in a highly diverse environment and be enthusiastic to develop new skills. You will have an understanding of the operation of a research lab and awareness of health and safety. You will be highly self-motivated, with good time management, communication, collaboration and IT skills. You will have ability to write up research work for publication in high profile journals and engage in public dissemination.
