The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for an Assistant Researcher, specifically in the area of simulation and analytical theory of linear and non-linearwave/particle interactions in all space environments including the ionosphere, the terrestrial magnetosphere, magnetospheres of other planets, the sun and other astrophysical objects. The Assistant Research Physicist will engage in independent and collaborative research with both SSL and outside personnel, attend and actively support scientific seminars, workshops, working team meetings and other venues for presentations of results and development of collaborative research relationships, vigorously pursue publication of research in peer reviewed journals and pursue additional funding opportunities consistent with existing and future research programs and goals.


The position will perform research to understand the generation of wave modes and their acceleration and scattering of particles that are observed on spacecraft. Wave modes include but are not limited to kinetic Alfven, lower hybrid, whistler, and electron cyclotron harmonic waves as well as Time Domain Structures.


The anticipated start date is July 1, 2018. The initial appointment will be full-time for two years, with a possibility of renewal. Extension of the appointment is subject to performance and availability of funds.


Salary will be commensurate with experience. Benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage are included in the compensation package.


Basic Qualifications (required at the time of application):
Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field.


Additional Required Qualifications (required by start date):
At least two years of postdoctoral experience. The successful candidate’s experience should be in plasma analytical theory and simulation.


Preferred Qualifications:
Familiar with the operation of and data from field and plasma experiments flown on satellites. Established publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
