Assistant Professor / Associate Professor / Professor (Tenure Track) in Sustainability Science (Behavioral Change Towards Sustainability)


The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry (, located on the Viikki Campus, promotes the sustainable use of natural resources and human wellbeing through scientific research and research-based teaching. The Faculty’s key areas of education and research are food, agricultural, forest and environmental sciences, and economics in relation to these areas. The Faculty has 3,200 undergraduate and postgraduate students and employs 500 experts.


Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science, HELSUS (, is a new cross-faculty research unit in sustainability science at the University of Helsinki. The mission of the institute is to contribute to sustainability transformations of the societies by means of inter- and transdisciplinary research and education. The research focuses in particular on urban studies, consumption and production, and Global South and Arctic contexts. The professors in the institute will work in the institute’s interdisciplinary research programs and teach in HELSUS associated master’s and doctoral programs. There are around 50 professors and more than 60 researchers associated to the institute in the HELSUS faculties.

The successful applicant may be appointed to a professorship or a fixed-term associate/assistant professorship (tenure track system consisting of two stages, each 3-5 years), depending on his or her qualifications and career stage.


Policy relevant work for the HELSUS focal area of sustainable consumption-production is appreciated. The appointee shall have research interest in transformative processes towards sustainability as triggered by behavioral change in the context of natural resources through one or more of the following areas: agricultural, food, forest or environmental economics and business management, consumer research, or sustainable entrepreneurship. Skills to conduct multidisciplinary and future oriented sustainability research and applying appropriate quantitative and qualitative research methods when analyzing interlinkages between sustainability issues is expected.


The assistant professor / associate professor / professor shall hold a doctoral degree and be able to conduct top-level international research related to facilitating change towards more responsible use of renewable natural resources, provide teaching based on such research in interdisciplinary contexts and supervising of Master theses. He/she is expected to also participate in doctoral training and the development of teaching, as well as to be able to acquire competitive research funding.


An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor within the tenure track system shall have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their capability and motivation as regards an academic career through publications and other means.


An appointee to a full professorship shall have top-level scholarly qualifications and experience in the supervision of scientific research, along with the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching as well as to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary to serve as academic leaders.


To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good English skills.
If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, he/she is expected to acquire moderate proficiency within a reasonable time after the appointment. Support for language studies is offered.


Applicants must have an appropriate doctorate in economics, business sciences or a related field at the time of appointment. Postdoctoral research experience is also preferable. Additional criteria include: 1) a strong record of scholarly achievement and publications; 2) experience with university-level teaching, mentoring, and other educational activities; 3) experience with working on interdisciplinary teams; 4) experience with, or a strong interest in, transdisciplinary “knowledge to action” approaches; 5) strong communication skills and; 6) evidence of potential to secure research funding. Applicants must be prepared to develop a cutting-edge research program supporting behavioral change towards sustainability. The position also will include teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses, collaborating with interdisciplinary sustainability research teams within the school and across campus, and performing school, university, professional, and community service.


The salary for the position will be based on levels 8−10 (professor) and 7 (assistant/associate professor) of the requirement scheme for teaching and research positions in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid. Annual gross salary for a full professor varies between 64,000 and 96,000 euros, and for an assistant/associate between 50,000 and 68,500 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
