Uppsala University is a broad research university with a strong international position. The task is to conduct research and education of the highest quality and to cooperate in different ways with society. Our most important asset is all the individuals who, with their curiosity and commitment, make Uppsala University one of the country's most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 40,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of 6.5 billion.

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with just over 200 employees. At the department, research and teaching are conducted at the intersection of ecology, evolution and genomics. See also

The research program in Limnology conducts research in aquatic sociology, microbiological ecology and biogeochemistry. Our research focuses on both basic understanding of lakes ecology and applied research that can help lakes and reservoirs. There are extensive resources to support all three research areas. The Erken Laboratory Station has a long history of limnological research, including a maritime surveillance program. The research program in Limnology now seeks a post doctor in marine modeling.

Project description: The candidate will participate in three projects underway at the department of limnology. Common to the projects is that they use mathematical models to predict temperature placement and water quality. All projects will use similar data sets and modeling methods, and they relate to weather, climate, marine science and marine ecology.

- The PROGNOS project ( develops methods for using data collected by high-frequency automated marine surveillance systems to improve parameterization and initialization of seagoing models. Such models provide forecasts for the water quality of lakes in the near future when they are powered by weather forecasts, which can support water management.

- The WATExR project has similar goals but uses probabilistic forecasts with the seasonal scale. Extensive time series for testing, calibrating and verifying models are available at the Erken Laboratory (, and data used in modeling activities.

- The Limnology research program is also coordinator of the marine sector's simulations in the Inter-Sector Impact Model Intercomparison Project (, which will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the effects of climate change on lakes. As part of this work, the candidate will be involved in simulating future climate conditions at Lake Erken and collaborating with others working on the ISIMIP network. The candidate will work as part of a group consisting of master's and doctoral students.

Implement existing hydrothermal and water quality model adapted to Lake Erken and develop model sets for other interesting lakes.

Develop model optimization methods that improve model performance to simulate water temperature and water quality, suitable for use in all three time scales of interest: short-term, seasonal and future climate.

Carry out historical and long-term future climate scenarios on Lake Erken using data obtained from the ISIMIP project.

Support ongoing work in the PROGNOS, WATExR and ISIMIP projects.

Qualification requirements: A doctorate in limnology, oceanography, civil engineer, environmental science or related subject . We are looking for a person with good cooperation and communication skills. The candidate is expected to take a leading role in the group and will help all members achieve common goals. The candidate should have a very good ability to express himself in English, both in speech and in writing. We attach great importance to personal suitability such as the ability to cooperate in group, independence and constructive approach.

To qualify as postdoctoral candidate, the applicant must have obtained a doctorate or have a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate, no more than three years before the end of the application period. If there are special reasons, the doctorate may have been completed earlier. For special reasons, it refers to leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical service, trusts in trade unions or other similar circumstances.

Meriting: It is a prerequisite if the candidate has experience in numerical seas, literature in computer programming and experience with FORTRAN and PYTHON plus. The ability to manipulate and analyze large data sets produced by numerical models and are interested in community problems related to climate change and water management are meritorious.

Instructions for application: Application must include Example: 1) A letter describing yourself, your research interests, why you want the service and why you are fit for the service, 2) Your resume, 3) A brief description of your education, 4 ) a copy of your doctoral dissertation and your grades; 5) name and contact details of at least two reference persons (e-mail address and telephone number) and 6) relevant publications. The application must be written in English.
