The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with just over 200 employees. At the department, research and teaching are conducted at the intersection of ecology, evolution and genomics. See further .


Evolution Biological Center (EBC: ) is one of the world's leading institutions for research and teaching in evolutionary biology. The research group is part of the program in evolutionary biology where several aspects of genetics and evolution are studied. The environment is very inspiring with a large proportion of international PhD students, postdocs and senior researchers, and there are very good opportunities for interaction with colleagues studying similar issues. The group has a major exchange with Science for Life Laboratory ( ) where we have access to advanced technology for DNA and RNA sequencing, large-scale data analysis and bioinformatic support.


Project description: Understanding the genetic background of how new species are formed and how organisms adapt to the environment are some major goals in evolutionary biology. In the research group we study natural populations of birds and butterflies and use a combination of field studies, molecular lab work and bioinformatic analyzes to try to understand arthropods and the genes that are important to the species's adaptations to the environment. The project will mainly consist of bioinformatic analyzes of large datasets, such as analysis of population genetic parameters in genome sequences from different populations and species, and gene expression studies in different environments. The project also provides the opportunity to carry out experiments, both in the field and in the lab. Depending on the student's interests and knowledge, the project can also contain analysis of the molecular processes that control the inheritance of the legume. The doctoral candidate may also choose to participate in other studies currently in progress in the group. Work tasks: A PhD student education is ongoing for four years and includes both research, courses and literature studies.


Qualification requirements: A master's degree (or equivalent) in biology or a related subject is a requirement. Some knowledge in bioinformatics and / or programming is necessary. The candidate should be able to express himself in English very well in both speech and writing.


Meritatory: The candidate should be motivated and enthusiastic and have a good understanding of evolutionary biology, especially in population genetics and / or art formation. Good experience in bioinformatic analysis of genetic data as well as programming is credible. Good knowledge about statistics is also an advantage.

The employment: The degree program comprises four years full-time studies. The employment may be combined with education or other institutional services (maximum 20%), which will extend the employment with the corresponding time.
