PhD Candidate in Atmospheric Sciences (2 positions)

The University of Helsinki is among the leading multidisciplinary research universities in the world. In addition to its 11 faculties, the University includes several independent institutes, some of which are jointly operated with other universities. Some 35,000 students are currently pursuing an undergraduate or a postgraduate degree at the University of Helsinki.

Measured in number of students and teachers, the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki is the largest science faculty in Finland. There are some 6,000 students taking a basic degree. Out of them, some 1,000 are postgraduates. There are some 500 international students, and over 200 researchers and teachers from abroad.
We are now looking for two highly motivated and talented early stage researchers (PhD candidates) to join our atmospheric science team related to the CLOUD experiment. The host of the research is University of Helsinki, Institute for Atmospheric and Earth system Research (INAR).

In the framework of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (MSCA-ITN-ETN) CLOUD-MOTION (CLOUD-MObility, Training and InnOvation Network), we are now recruiting two ESRs (Early Stage Researchers), who will be part of a network of 15 ESRs enrolled in a European network of academic and private institutions. The candidates will be employed for 36 months at the University of Helsinki, Finland and conduct their PhD studies in the Doctoral Programme in Atmospheric Sciences.

The scientific objectives of CLOUD-MOTION are to investigate the formation of aerosol particles and ice under precisely controlled conditions that closely simulate the atmosphere. This process is of high importance for the formation of cloud condensation nuclei, which lead to cloud formation and therefore impact the climate.
For the investigation of these topics, the ESRs of the CLOUD-MOTION network will work together at the CLOUD chamber at CERN ( ca. 6-8 weeks per year to perform dedicated experiments at the facility.

The PhD project objective is to elucidate the mechanisms of new particle formation in various atmospheric environments. You will perform dedicated experiments at the atmospheric simulation chamber at CERN within this broad international collaboration.

The first position will focus on the measurement of ion and neutral particle concentrations starting from molecular scale using state-of-the-art nanoparticle instrumentation, and on the further development the methods and analysis techniques for application in a wider range of conditions and for particles of different chemical compositions.

The second position will focus on the determination of the chemical composition of neutral and ion clusters using mass spectrometric methods to reveal the formation pathways of charged and neutral aerosol particles. The candidate is also expected to contribute to the development of APi-ToF and different chemical ionization methods for detection of neutral gas phase species including particle precursors and clusters.

Training Programme: The ESRs must take part in an extensive training programme organized by the participating partners of CLOUD-MOTION. This includes 3 summer schools and a winter school, a media training workshop and at least one secondment to another partner institution.

Additional training is provided by the Doctoral Programme in Atmospheric Sciences. See more information at:

• Demonstrated capacity in problem solving and data analysis
• Experience in carrying out research independently and working in a team
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
• Good time management and project management skills

The requirements for pursuing a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki can be found at:
According to EU eligibility criteria, researchers may be of any nationality, BUT must be at their early career stage (0-4 years research experience) and may not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Finland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the date of recruitment.

How to apply:

Please submit your application, together with the required attachments (CV, list of publications, motivation letter and MSc diploma or transcript of records) through the University of Helsinki Recruitment System via the link Apply for job. Applicants who are employees of the University of Helsinki are requested to send their application via the SAP HR portal. Please indicated which one of the two positions you are primarily applying for. Apply latest on 31 Jan 2018. The starting date of the positions will be agreed with the selected candidates.
