The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest faculty of TU Delft, with around 550 scientists, a support staff of 250 and 1,800 students. The faculty conducts fundamental, application-oriented research and offers scientific education at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The faculty is active in the fields of Life and Health Science & Technology, Nanoscience, Chemical Engineering, Radiation Science & Technology, and Applied Physics.

The Reactor Institute Delft (RID) and the research department Radiation Science and Technology (RST) jointly form the Dutch national centre for academic research and education on the production and use of ionising radiation. The department's research programme focuses on applications related to health and sustainable energy.

Physics-driven innovations in medicine are at the heart of the Medical Physics and Technology (MP&T) section. Our research mission is to develop better methods and technologies for the personalised diagnosis and treatment of disease, focusing on radiation-based approaches in medical imaging and radiation oncology. The group is closely involved in the R&D programme of the Holland Proton Therapy Centre (HollandPTC), located right next door. Research topics include advanced technologies for proton therapy, new instruments for in vivo molecular imaging, novel computational approaches in treatment planning, and the study of radiation interaction at the macroscopic and molecular level. The present project is performed in collaboration with the Applied Radiation and Isotopes (ARI) section of RST.


Job description

Uveal melanoma (UV) is the most common primary malignant tumour of the eye, affecting more than 4500 patients annually in Europe alone. Proton therapy (PT) is capable of performing highly local irradiation and is one of the main eye-sparing treatments. The PROTONS4vision consortium, involving Leiden University Medical Centre (, Erasmus Medical Centre (, and the TU Delft, is developing novel, MRI-based technologies to improve tumour localisation, therapy planning, and image-guided PT of UMs. The successful candidate will develop a phantom that mimics the human eye and its (in)voluntary motion. The phantom will be filled with a tissue-equivalent radiofluorescent gel dosimeter, to fully map the 3D dose deposition within the eyeball, tumour, and sensitive structures. You will use the phantom to validate the full chain of imaging, planning, and dose delivery techniques developed within PROTONS4vision.



We are looking for an enthusiastic, creative researcher motivated to push the limits in medical physics and technology in close collaboration with colleagues from other institutions. Requirements include a PhD in Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Physical Chemistry, or an adjacent field. Experience in optical imaging techniques and/or radiation dosimetry is an advantage. Excellent English and communication skills are requested. You should possess a pro-active, independent, problem-solving, and result-oriented work attitude. You are expected to publish and participate in international conferences.
