Tenure track position, Organic Chemistry

 

The Faculty of Technology at the University of Oulu announces a tenure track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in the field of Organic Chemistry. The position will be located in the Sustainable Chemistry Research Unit. The unit’s staff includes 2 professors, 15 doctoral level teachers/researchers, 3 technical/administrative staff, close to 20 PhD students, as well as post-graduate students and visiting scientists. The unit has an extensive research program in the fields of Applied Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry, see http://www.oulu.fi/chemistry/node/4850. The field of organic chemistry has a rich history at the University, starting with the first Professor of Organic Chemistry, Prof. Hans Krieger, who joined the faculty in 1962 with a fresh doctoral degree from the group of Nobelist Kurt Alder. Since then, research in organic chemistry at the University has always focused, in one way or another, on the impact of organic chemistry on natural products and natural resources.

 

The new strategy of the University of Oulu is directed at global challenges in five focus areas, see http://www.oulu.fi/university. One of the main focus areas in the strategy is “Creating sustainability through materials and systems”, which includes research from fundamental materials science to the concepts of bio and circular economies. This includes “Lignocellulose-based biomaterials for industrial renewal” which is one of the key research themes in the Sustainable Chemistry Research Unit. Research in this tenure track position should also be closely associated with the activities of Bioeconomy Research Community (BRC) at the University of Oulu (www.oulu.fi/bioeconomy).

 

Description of the field of the tenure track position: The candidate is expected to carry out research in the field of Organic Chemistry. The successful candidate is also expected to establish an active research in the unit that involves supervision of doctoral and undergraduate students and results in highly-ranked scientific publications. He/she should also take part in the educational activities in the degree program for Chemistry. The research field will form an integral part of the research unit, and will involve working in close cooperation with the unit’s other groups and researchers.

 

Responsibilities and Required Qualifications The successful candidate is expected to conduct high-level research in the field of Organic Chemistry, including research management and funding acquisition, and to take actively part in international scientific community and collaboration. Furthermore, the duties include undergraduate and graduate level teaching and supervision of academic theses. Career assessment on the tenure track is based on regular performance assessment that measures the candidate´s merits in all these areas.

 

It is envisaged that the successful applicant will possess the experience and competence to be placed at Assistant or Associate Professor level in the tenure track system. The position of an assistant professor is for persons who have recently finished their doctoral dissertation and are advancing towards a professional research career. The position is always fixed-term and the duration varies from three to five years. A continuation period may be granted as indicated in the University of Oulu Tenure Track guidelines. Only doctors who have finished their doctoral thesis less than ten years ago can be appointed to the position of an assistant professor. The selection criteria for an assistant professor are the following:

 

  • PhD in a relevant field (organic chemistry)
  • Research potential, (publications, especially internationally refereed scientific publications; participation in funding applications/funding granted). Past or potential success in obtaining ERC Starting or Consolidator Grants will also be considered.
  • National and international networks and experience from working abroad
  • Experience in teaching and supervision of master´s and doctoral students
  • Demonstrating developed skills is prerequisite for a continuation period

 

The position of an associate professor is initially a fixed-term position for five years, but a continuation period may be granted or the position may be made permanent. Being granted continuation for the position requires meeting the below-mentioned criteria as well as successful research work as indicated in the University of Oulu Tenure Track guidelines.

 

When appointing a person to the position of an associate professor the applicants are evaluated based on the following criteria:

 

  • Publications on an international level: dissemination, quality of the publication forums, references to the publications
  • Active role in the research training
  • Acquisition of external funding
  • Working in more than one research facility during one’s career (in most fields represented at the University of Oulu this signifies working abroad)
  • An active role in the international scientific community
  • Acknowledgements and awards

 

Salary The salary will be based on the levels 5 – 6 (assistant professor) and 6 – 7 (associate professor) of the demand level chart for teaching and research personnel of the salary system of Finnish Universities. In addition to the basic salary, supplementary salary will be given for personal achievements and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 46.3 % of the basic salary level for the position. Therefore, the full salary is approximately 3,500 – 4,500 euros per month for an assistant professor and 4,000 – 5,200 euros per month for an associate professor.

Evaluators The selection procedure will be carried out by an Appointment Committee according to the University of Oulu Tenure Track guidelines.
