Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Ultracold Atoms

Department of Physics, Parks Road, Oxford

Grade 7: £31,604 - £38,833 p.a.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in atomic and laser physics with a particular focus on the experimental investigation of an ultracold dipolar gas of Erbium atoms. The post is available for a fixed-term of 3 years.

The research project is part of a five year EPSRC Programme grant on designing out of equilibrium quantum systems (DesOEQ). The research aims to use ultracold atoms to simulate and study out-of-equilibrium many-body quantum systems. In particular it will use an ultracold gas of Erbium atoms to explore the effect of longer-range dipole-dipole interactions on quantum dynamics and non-equilibrium states. Topics to be covered will include studying the effect of long-range interactions on critical phase transition dynamics and studies of periodically driven systems and turbulence.

The successful candidate will work directly with Professor Robert Smith and a team of graduate students. The role will involve: designing and undertaking the experimental studies; analysing, understanding and presenting the results; maintaining and running the lab; and providing day-to-day supervision of graduate students. The postholder will have the opportunity to teach.

Applicants should possess, or be close to obtaining a doctorate in physics or a related field and ideally have a strong background in experimental ultracold atoms or quantum optics.

Please direct enquiries about the role to Professor Smith (robert.smith@physics.ox.ac.uk).

You will be required to upload a supporting statement including research interests, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on Monday 30 April 2018 can be considered.
