Duties and Responsibilities

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work in the Department of Chemistry at UCL’s Bloomsbury Campus, on a research project supervised by Prof Giuseppe Battaglia. The appointee will work on the characterisation polymersomes for therapeutic and diagnostic applications. The project is part of a multidisciplinary effort aimed toward the design of a multiplexed biodegradable carrier with characteristics suitable for clinical translation for the treatment of brain tumours. This will involve collaboration with clinicians, physical biologists, and physicists.

The postholder will work on the design and characterisation of multiplexed nanoparticles to target brain tumours. The work will involve the design of polymersomes bearing multiple ligands and their interaction with living cells. We are interested in establishing single-cell based protocols to correlate multiplexing and multivalency with endocytosis, cellular trafficking, and transcytosis efficiency. Both of these will be studied in glioma and brain endothelial cells. The postholder will be required to carry out research into studying the targeting and trafficking of personalised polymersomes into both blood brain barrier and glioma cells.


The appointment is funded by the EPSRC for 3 years initially.

Key Requirements

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in cell trafficking and endocytosis with experience in advanced imaging techniques and imaging analysing. Experience with nanomaterials, brain tumour, and blood brain barrier models is desirable but not essential. The appointee will have a PhD (or be near to being awarded a PhD) in Physical Biology, Cell Biophysics, Biological Physics or relevant discipline. We will accept applications from both life and physical scientists as long as they fulfil the essential requirements discussed above. The candidate must demonstrate their contribution to the scientific community, in the form of an appropriate number of publications in prestigious journals, patents, and conferences.


Please note, appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary £30,316 to £31,967 per annum, including London Allowance of £3,031 p.a.) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
