Research Associate in Personalised Nanomedicine

UCL Department / Division

Chemistry

Location of position

London

Grade7

Hours Full Time

Salary
(inclusive of London allowance)£34,635 to £41,864 per annum

Duties and Responsibilities

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work in the Department of Chemistry at UCL’s Bloomsbury Campus, on a research project supervised by Prof Giuseppe Battaglia. The appointee will work on the characterisation polymersomes for therapeutic and diagnostic applications. The project is part of a multidisciplinary effort aimed toward the design of a multiplexed biodegradable carrier with characteristics suitable for clinical translation for the treatment of brain tumours. This will involve collaboration with clinicians, physical biologists, and physicists.

The postholder will be required to carry out research into studying the targeting and trafficking of personalised polymersomes into both blood brain barrier and glioma cells. The appointment is funded by the EPSRC for 3 years initially.

Key Requirements

The successful candidate will have experience in handling, culturing and characterising induced pluripotent stem (IPS) cells to engineer 3D models of glioma and blood brain barrier. They will have a proven track record in stem cell biology and experience in reprogramming cells into IPS and differentiating them into desired cells. Experience with nanomaterials, blood brain barrier (BBB) and glioma is desirable. The appointee will have a PhD (or be near to being awarded a PhD) in Cancer Biology, Neuroscience, Neuro-Oncology or relevant discipline, and advanced knowledge of neuro-physiology or glioma biology. We will accept applications from both life and physical scientists as long as they fulfil the essential requirements discussed above. The candidate must demonstrate their contribution to the scientific community in the form of an appropriate number of publications in prestigious journals, patents, and conferences.

Please note, appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary £30,316 to £31,967 per annum, including London Allowance of £3,031) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
