Research Associate on Theoretical Biophysics of Bacterial Growth and Antibiotic Resistance

UCL Department / Division

Physics and Astronomy

Location of position

Hours Full Time

(inclusive of London allowance)£34,635 - £41,864 per annum

Duties and Responsibilities

We are recruiting for the position of a postdoctoral research associate on a project funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, to be carried out in the group of Dr. Shiladitya Banerjee at the Department of Physics & Astronomy at UCL.

The aim of the project is to determine the mechanisms by which single bacterial cells adapt their physical and biochemical properties to resist antibacterial drugs. To this end, the postdoc will develop predictive theoretical/computational models of bacterial growth and division cycle when treated with antibiotics using advanced statistical physics, systems biology and data-driven modelling.

This position is funded for 2 years in the first instance.

Key Requirements

The successful applicant will have a PhD in a relevant area of Physical or Biophysical Sciences (e.g. Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Biology, Biophysics) and expertise in Statistical Physics, Soft Matter Physics, and/or Computational Methods for the modelling stochastic single cell behaviour.

Candidates should have the ability for creative and original research of the highest impact, as demonstrated by a strong scientific publication track record in highly regarded international peer-reviewed journals.

Knowledge of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, soft matter physics, and cellular biology is desirable.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B (salary £30,316-£31,967 per annum, inclusive of London allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis
