UQ Physics is located in the School of Mathematics and Physics in the Faculty of Science. The Discipline is internationally recognised for its research excellence, and hosts a number of world-class research centres. Details of the research interests of academic staff may be accessed on the School’s web site at http://www.smp.uq.edu.au/

Physics is one of the University of Queensland’s top 30 research strengths, and the School of Mathematics and Physics is proud to support a major research effort in astrophysics.  In the recent Excellence in Research for Australia 2015 assessment, the University of Queensland was rated “well-above international standard” in 02 Physical Sciences, as well as in the sub-categories 0201 Astronomical and Space Sciences, 0204 Condensed Matter Physics, and 0206 Quantum Physics.

The role

There are 2 positions in total:

  • 1 x full time, continuing at Level B or C and;
  • 1 x full time, fixed term for 3 years at Level B.

The School of Mathematics and Physics is seeking to appoint two talented astrophysicists who will further enhance and expand upon our existing research strengths in cosmology or galactic astrophysics. For the continuing position the successful appointee will ideally build a research program that can capitalise on Australia’s membership in the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and/or the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), but for both positions we will consider a wide range of potential astrophysics research interests.

In addition, the successful applicants will undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching plus postgraduate supervision. Please indicate in your application whether you wish to be considered for the continuing position, the fixed-term position, or both.

The person

The appointees will have a demonstrated record of performing international quality research, and will have a vision for developing and building their own research group.  They will also have a demonstrated ability or potential for innovative teaching.  It is desirable, that the successful candidates demonstrate capacity to develop and contribute to major international collaborative research projects. Ideally, the research program of the successful candidate should expand the research profile of the School in new and exciting directions, while forming synergistic collaborations with one or more of the existing strengths in UQ astrophysics, which include:

  • using astrophysics/cosmology to test fundamental physics;
  • understanding dark energy and dark matter;
  • understanding galaxy evolution;
  • understanding the role of black holes in galaxy evolution.

The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion. Applications are particularly encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
