Last modification : Wednesday, March 28, 2018

A full-time academic position is open in the Group of Science, Engineering & Technology, Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry, Division of Quantum Chemistry and Physical Chemistry at KU Leuven, in the area of gas-phase theoretical chemistry. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent research record and with educational competence within the field of chemistry, especially theoretical and computational chemistry. The Department of Chemistry has an excellent research infrastructure, an extensive international network and international visibility. The Department of Chemistry, with in total 32 senior academic staff members, is structured into 5 divisions, covering quantum chemistry and physical chemistry, molecular design and synthesis, molecular imaging and photonics, polymer chemistry and materials, and biochemistry and molecular and structural biology. The mission of the Division of Quantum Chemistry and Physical Chemistry is the study of chemistry using theoretical methods based on quantum physics. The division has a very international membership and has extensive experience in different aspects of quantum chemistry and its applications. Members of the division collaborate intensively with other groups within the department, the Group of Science, Engineering & Technology and beyond. The Group of Science, Engineering & Technology has an extensive national and international network and actively participates in European networks. It also has a stable offer of highly talented PhD students and postdocs and a supportive work environment.

Duties

Research

You develop an internationally competitive research programme in the area of theoretical description of gas-phase chemistry.

Your research activities should be oriented towards the use and or development of the methods of theoretical chemistry to investigate gas-phase chemistry, including spectroscopy and reactivity, and the applications there of to contemporary problems in areas such as atmospheric chemistry and astrochemistry.

Research experience and interests that are complementary with those of the other members of the division, the departments of chemistry and physics and the Group of Science, Engineering &Technology are desirable.

You build a research group of international level and collaborate with other research groups of the Department of Chemistry in the Group Science and Technology, and internationally. Collaborations in the area of atmospheric chemistry and astrochemistry will be particularly valued.

You supervise PhD students, acquire resources for research and publish at the highest scientific level.

Education

You deliver high-quality chemistry teaching in educational programmes at the bachelor and master level in science and engineering, with a clear commitment for the quality of the programme as a whole. A particular responsibility is to contribute to teaching theoretical and computational chemistry, through the Erasmus Mundus Master of Science in Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling.

You also contribute to the pedagogic project of the faculty/university through the supervision of bachelor and master theses and as a promoter of PhD students.

You develop your teaching in accordance with KU Leuven's vision on activating and research-based education and make use of the possibilities for the educational professionalisation offered by the faculty and the university.

Service

Besides the responsibilities for research and for teaching, you are expected to be willing to provide services to the community, at the level of the department, the faculty, and beyond, depending on requirements and your personal interests.

Requirements

You have a PhD in Science or a related field.

You have a strong research profile in theoretical chemistry. The quality of your research is proven by publications in prominent international journals. International research experience as well as experience in the areas of atmospheric chemistry or astrochemistry are important advantages.

If you were awarded the PhD degree only recently, it is important that you provide support for your research and growth potential by giving the names of possible academic references.

You possess organizational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership capacities within a university context.

Proficiency in English ins required.

The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in administrative meetings.

Its internationally renowned research and educational programmes cause it to consistently rank among the best 50 universities worldwide. KU Leuven is a research-intensive, internationally oriented university that carries out both fundamental and applied scientific research. It is highly inter- and multidisciplinary focused and strives for international excellence. In this regard, it actively works together with research partners in Belgium and abroad. It provides its students with an academic education that is based on high-quality scientific research.

You will work in Leuven, a historic, dynamic and lively city located in the heart of Belgium, within 20 minutes of Brussels, the capital of the European Union, and less than two hours from Paris, London and Amsterdam.

Depending on your record and qualifications, you will be appointed to or tenured in one of the grades of the senior academic staff: assistant professor, associate professor, professor or full professor.
