Marie Curie Ph.D. fellow in Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology


Department of Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology, Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen is offering Ph.D. scholarships commencing on Aug 1st, 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.  



Two three-year Early-Stage Researcher Ph.D. positions. These will be part of the Innovative Training Network SAGEX "Scattering Amplitudes: from Geometry to Experiment" funded by the European Community. As part of the training we will offer participation to several introductory and advanced training schools, as well as visits to leading software companies, including Wolfram, Maplesoft, RISC etc. Projects descriptions are (A) and (B) in the area of scattering amplitudes.  



Project A: Scattering equations, kinematic algebra and tree and loop amplitudes.  

Objectives: We will investigate the CHY formalism, realizing explicit links to other insightful representations, e.g. the string-based Bern-Kosower rules, the Grassmannian and Amplituhedron formalism by Arkani-Hamed et al., and ambitwistor strings. We will also investigate how scattering equations can be best employed in practical computations, e.g. using the newly developed concepts of Q-cuts and integration rules for scattering equations. Connections between KLT and BCJ/monodromy relations will be studied with the goal of finding a kinematic algebra for amplitudes valid at tree level, first, and then loop level.  


Project B: Applications of amplitude results in effective field theory  

Objectives: Several powerful amplitude techniques will be applied to Standard Model extensions with effective operator couplings, and we will systematically analyze corrections from higher-derivative couplings. As a first step, we will compute tree amplitudes via on-shell recursion. Next, unitarity will be used to generate loop results. We will then explore how the standard unitarity-based program can incorporate explicit cutoff scales in the (effective) theory. For Run 2 of the LHC, this will lead to efficient tests for the existence of higher-derivative corrections to the Standard Model, critical for identifying any such new physics.  


In order to be eligible, each applicant must fulfil the following criteria at the time of recruitment:  

  •  Mobility: At the time of recruitment, the applicant must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc…) in the country of the host organization for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.  

  •  Qualifications and research experience: The applicant must fulfil the requirements defined for Early Stage Researchers (ESRs): ESRs are researcher who, at the time of recruitment, has NOT yet been awarded the doctorate degree and is in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of his/her research career.

The theoretical particle physics and cosmology group at the Niels Bohr Institute and the Niels Bohr International Academy is involved in a wide scope of research activities centred on phenomenology, quantum theories of gauge fields, gravity and astrophysics.

Job description  

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a Ph.D. student at SCIENCE are:  

  • To manage and carry through your research project  

  • Attend Ph.D. courses  

  • Write scientific articles and your Ph.D. thesis  

  • Teach and disseminate your research  

  • To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad  

  • Work for the department  


Formal requirements  

Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Physics with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.  


Terms of employment  

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.  

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.  


The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 312.879 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 43.219). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
