Research Associate in Chemistry of LCE actuators (Fixed Term)


Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position investigating liquid crystalline vitrimers and their mechanical actuation at the Cavendish Laboratory (Department of Physics, University of Cambridge, Cambridge). The aim of project is to develop new polymeric materials for thermal and photo-actuating applications.


The successful candidate will join the BSS research group, working with Professor Eugene Terentjev ( We are looking for an experienced organic chemist with a PhD in Chemistry or Materials Science to lead the laboratory effort making the new functional polymeric materials, and participate in supervising a PhD student. Experience in liquid-crystalline elastomers, and/or in vitrimers and bond-exchange reactions is a significant bonus.


Key duties and responsibilities expected from the successful candidate will include, but not be limited to, conducting individual and collaborative projects, assisting in the supervision of student projects, building internal and external contacts and planning the use of research resources, laboratories and workshops as appropriate. The work will be funded by the ERC Advanced grant 786659: "Active Polymers for Renewable Functional Actuators". Successful candidates who have been awarded their PhD by the appointment date will be appointed as a Research Associate, Grade 7 (£31,604 - £38,833 per annum). The candidate would ideally start as soon as possible after October 2018.


Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
