We are seeking a highly motivated researcher for a position available from June 2018 until May 2021. The researcher will work with Dr Heather Graven to conduct modelling of atmospheric methane and collaborate on development of radiocarbon measurements of atmospheric methane, conduct fieldwork, and analyse data to estimate and partition methane sources. The position will be based within the Space and Atmospheric Physics Research Group and will be supported by an ERC Starting Grant Award.



Rising atmospheric methane concentration is the second most important contributor to climate change, but methane emissions and their partitioning into different sources such as the livestock and fossil fuel industries currently have large uncertainties. This project aims to develop methods for atmospheric observation-based studies of methane emissions using radiocarbon in methane.


Duties and responsibilities

The post holder will conduct atmospheric methane modelling and inversion modelling. S/he will contribute to observational method development, field deployment in the UK and Ireland, and data analysis with other members of the team. The position comes with funds for travel and computing. 



The post holder will have opportunities to contribute to the Department’s teaching activities.

 

Essential requirements

 

    • A PhD or an equivalent level of professional qualifications

    • Experience with atmospheric trace gas modelling and data analysis

    • A strong background in atmospheric and/or carbon cycle science

    • Experience measuring radiocarbon and/or stable isotopes in methane or other species would be desirable

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £32, 380 - £34, 040 per annum.
