MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY



KU Leuven, Department of Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences, Laboratory for Medicinal Chemistry invites applications for a full-time tenured track academic position as assistant professor. We are looking for an internationally oriented, dynamic and motivated individual with an excellent research record who is also able to teach courses for the curricula within the Faculties of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicine, primarily basic and advanced organic chemistry. The research group of Medicinal Chemistry is a multidisciplinary scientific environment housing chemical synthesis, molecular modeling, mass spectrometry, NMR and synthetic biology. The lab has a dual focus on the classical medicinal chemistry as well as new fundamental principles in synthetic biology and is embedded in the well-known Rega Institute for medical research that recently moved to new infrastructure at the KU Leuven – Campus Gasthuisberg.

 

Duties

Research

  • You will start your own excellent research program in medicinal chemistry based on organic synthesis, which is complementary to the current medicinal chemistry projects at the laboratory for Medicinal Chemistry. The intention is to consolidate the activities in the development of innovative medicinal products and in drug discovery in fields like infectious diseases, immunology, cancer, metabolic diseases.
  • You actively cooperate and interact within a multidisciplinary research environment consisting of staff members in the Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry, the Department of Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences (https://gbiomed.kuleuven.be/english/research/50000715) and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Rega Institute (https://rega.kuleuven.be/).
  • You are expected to attract competitive research funds and publish the obtained results at the highest scientific level.
  • You are able to identify and pursue potential valorization of your research results.
  • You will support and further expand national and international research collaborations in the field of medicinal chemistry. 
  • You will supervise master students and PhD students in their research in an international setting.


Education

You will take on teaching responsibilities in the field of organic and/or medicinal chemistry in its broadest sense.

The teaching meets the requirements set for academic degree programs in terms of level, orientation and academic focus and fits in with the teaching concept of KU Leuven.

 

Service

You are prepared to provide scientific, societal and internal services and you contribute to the local and international visibility of the research group and the department as a whole.

 

Profile

  • Preferentially, you have a master diploma in pharmaceutical sciences, biochemistry or chemistry and a PhD showing background in organic synthesis.
  • You have strong knowledge of organic chemistry and biochemistry and lab experience and publications in the field of medicinal chemistry.
  • You are able to independently perform research and to attract the necessary competitive research funding.
  • You will supervise pre-doctoral and doctoral students in an international setting.
  • You are expected to have an excellent research record and very good teaching and training skills,in order to contribute to the research output of the department and to the quality of the educational program in an academic context. The high quality of your research should be evidenced by publications in international peer-reviewed journals. International research experience is mandatory.
  • You have good organizational skills and you have a team-player attitude.
  • A good command of English is required. KU Leuven provides courses in academic English.
  • The administrative and educational language at KU Leuven is Dutch. Since this job offer includes teaching duties at bachelor level in Dutch, an attested CEFR level of C1 is mandatory for a decisive positive to become permanently appointed at the end of the tenure track period. The university provides a training offer to reach the required level in Dutch.
  • With your motivation letter you add a research statement (max. 3 pages) highlighting your added value for the research program of our Department and for the Biomedical Sciences group. In a teaching statement, you elaborate on your vision on academic teaching (max. 1 page).

Depending on your record and qualifications, you will be appointed to or tenured in one of the grades of the senior academic staff: assistant professor, associate professor, professor or full professor. In principle, junior researchers are appointed as assistant professor on the tenure track for a period of 5 years; after this period and a positive evaluation, they are permanently appointed (or tenured) as an associate professor.
