Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Experimental Particle Acceleration Physics
The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration until 18 October 2019.
The origin of high-energy cosmic rays still remains a mystery, a century after their discovery. Although several different processes and astrophysical sites may be implicated, there is a consensus that diffusive shock acceleration in supernova remnants accelerates the bulk of Galactic hadronic cosmic rays, up to hundreds of TeV in energy. This project aims at providing a new route towards the understanding of cosmic ray acceleration via laboratory experiments using high powered lasers (including the largest ones in the world, notably the National Ignition Facility in California).
The successful candidate will lead the planning and execution of experiments as well as analysis of the data using both numerical and analytical methods. They may also be involved in studying the role of turbulence in producing the observed synchrotron radiation in young supernova remnants. Other duties of the role include representing the group at external events, collaborating on preparation of reports and journal articles, presenting papers at conferences/workshops and assisting in the supervision of graduate students. The postholder will have the opportunity to teach.
Applicants should hold a PhD, or be near completion in physics or a related field and ideally a strong background in plasma and laser physics. Previous experience in the field of astronomy or particle physics will be an advantage.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate excellent skills in plasma diagnostics (both optical and X-rays and/or particles), as well as data analysis capabilities.
Please direct enquiries about the role to Professor Gianluca Gregori (gianluca.gregori@physics.ox.ac.uk) or Professor Subir Sarkar (subir.sarkar@physics.ox.ac.uk).
You will be required to upload a brief statement of research interests, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application.
Only applications received before 12.00 midday on 31 October 2018 can be considered.
