PhD fellow in Optomechanical Quantum Sensors, Niels Bohr Institute University of Copenhagen, Niels Bohr Institutet Denmark

PhD fellow in Optomechanical Quantum Sensors, Niels Bohr Institute

We are looking for highly motivated, excellent candidates with a master’s degree in physics or related fields, to advance our research with optomechanical quantum sensors and their application in classical and quantum sensing.

Project description

The Quantum Optomechanics group at the Niels Bohr Institute has pioneered a new approach to engineer mechanical sensors of unprecedented coherence. We now seek support in applying this new generation of devices as quantum sensors and transducers, for optomechanical quantum measurements, coupling of mechanical resonators to nuclear spins, subnanometer magnetic resonance imaging, and mass density measurements of individual molecules. The research is embedded in several international collaboration networks such as OMTand HOT, as well as a collaboration with experts at ETH Zurich in the field of force microscopy and magnetic quantum sensing.

The PhD student will implement new concepts for mechanical sensors and transducers, drawing on phononic engineering, parametric transduction and quantum feedback techniques. Knowledge and experience in any of the relevant fields—finite-element modeling (preferably MEMS, nanomechanics), nanofabrication, microwave and/or optical interferometry, photonic/phononic crystals, and basic quantum measurement theory—is a plus, but not a necessity. Enthusiasm to acquire, apply and advance scientific skills within a dynamic, hard-working and international team is key.

Principal supervisor is Prof. Albert Schliesser, Niels Bohr Institute, albert.schliesser@nbi.dk .
