The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics ( at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher, under the direction of Assistant Professor Alexie Leauthaud. The Postdoctoral Researcher will conduct forefront research on topics related to gravitational lensing, galaxy clustering, cosmology, and galaxy formation. Candidates with both observational and theoretical backgrounds are invited to apply. This position will require the selected candidate to work independently yet collegially in a team environment. The Leauthaud research group is involved in several wide-field state-of-the-art cosmological survey projects including the Hyper Suprime Cam Survey (HSC), LSST, WFIRST, LSST, and the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). Together with collaborators, the incumbent will have access to the Keck and Lick Observatories and the Hyades super computer at UCSC.


Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply: expertise in extragalactic cosmology, expertise in galaxy formation, and/or demonstrated record of publication.


Postdoctoral Scholar - Employee


Minimum starting salary is $56,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Minimum annual salary rates are made based on the individual’s Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, Astrophysics, or a related field.


As soon as possible after the initial review of applications, but no later than September 1, 2019. Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the initial appointment. Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment (for up to a total of three years).


Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; the initial appointment is for a minimum of one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Reappointment will be contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding. The total duration of an individual’s postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution. Under limited circumstances, an exception to this limit may be considered, not to exceed a sixth year.
