Research Associate (Fixed Term)

A position exists for a Research Associate in Theoretical Physics.

The role is funded by the Simons Foundation, to work with Professor Nigel Cooper in the general area of Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics.

The role holder will work on the theory of quantum many-body systems. Areas of current interest within the group include topological phases of matter, light-matter interactions, and far-from-equilibrium quantum dynamics. Much of the work within the group is motivated by experimental developments. The group benefits from having a wide network of experimental collaborators and colleagues working on electronic materials, cold atomic/molecular gases, and photonic systems. The role holder will be able to work closely with Prof. Cooper and will be given significant opportunities to help set the research directions and to establish an independent research profile.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in theoretical physics or a closely related discipline with a proven track record in pursuing scientific investigation from the conception stage through to publication and a solid understanding of the theory of many particle quantum systems. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in theories of systems with topological properties, familiarity with theories of far-from-equilibrium quantum systems, some knowledge of scientific programming and computational methods for many-body quantum systems. A solid understanding of the subject area should be demonstrated through a strong publication record, in major international journals and presentations in major international conferences. The candidate should be able to write reports, present results, contribute to academic papers, have a high level of accuracy and attention to detail and experience of managing own workload. The candidate will also have organisational, communication and team-working skills.

The post holder will be located at the Department of Physics Cavendish Laboratory JJ Thomson Avenue Cambridge CB3 0HE, UK.

Salary Ranges: Research Associate: £32,236 - £39,609

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for two years in the first instance. The starting date is flexible, from 1st March 2019, but the candidate is expected to be in post by 1st October 2019.
