£27025 to £31302 per annum, depending on skills and experience (minimum £30395 with relevant PhD).


We seek to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic organic chemist for a Research Associate/Fellow post within the research group of Prof Simon Woodward ( at the GSK Carbon Neutral Laboratory of the School of Chemistry. The successful candidate will work on a Leverhulme Trust funded project involving the preparation of a new type of cyclic aromatic compound. This is a highly challenging project in synthetic organic chemistry and requires excellence in contemporary practical skills, preferably demonstrated by your previous publication record. The project will build on 2017-2018 work by Woodward and co-workers in DOI: 10.1002/chem.201701170 and DOI: 10.1021/acs.joc.8b01770.


The successful candidate will carry out the following duties:

  • Undertake organic synthesis towards the proposed cyclic aromatic targets directed by and in direct collaboration with Simon Woodward.

  • Prepare high quality supporting data for publications resulting from the project.

  • Provide high quality pure samples to Woodward group collaborators interested in defining the electronic and other properties of compounds resulting from the project.


Candidates must:

  • Hold a PhD (or expect their PhD award in early 2019) in synthetic organic chemistry.

  • Show demonstrated excellence and productivity in synthetic organic chemistry.

  • Have excellent organisational and good communication and team working skills.


Additional experience in the synthesis of organic materials would be useful but not vital for this post.


This is a full time post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 28 months. The post must start on 11 February 2019.
