The Department of Physics and Astronomy has vibrant research groups in Biomedical Physics (including biophysics, biophotonics, and biomedical imaging), Electromagnetic and Acoustic Materials (including material synthesis, and imaging and characterisation using microwave, ultrafast laser, and synchrotron sources, as well as numerical and analytical theory in quantum optics and quantum information science), and Quantum Systems and Nanomaterials (including experimental and theoretical research into the properties of electrons, photons, and phonons in nanomaterials and nanostructures). Our researchers have access to state-of-the-art equipment, including a clean room containing a range of lithographic and deposition systems, ultrafast and multiphoton laser systems,as well as a campus-based high-performance computer. The Department also has strong interdisciplinary links with Engineering, the newly-opened Living Systems Institute, and the Medical School.

Candidates in areas related to the three Physics research groups detailed above will be considered. (Note that there is a separate recruitment process for a fixed-term lecturer in the Astrophysics Group). The successful candidates will be expected to conduct internationally-excellent research programmes and to contribute to relevant areas of teaching as appropriate. The posts will be offered initially on a fixed term contract for up to 5 years. Should a successful candidate secure a substantial fellowship or research grant during their contract, then the College will normally consider that individual for a permanent academic position.
