PhD position, Organic synthesis and homogeneous catalysis

In the framework of an Excellence of Science Project (EOS) (http://www.eosprogramme.be/) of the National Science Foundation in Belgium (FNRS and FWO), connecting research teams of different Belgian universities with complementary scientific expertise on the topic synthesis of commodity and fine chemicals from wood, the research divisions of organic chemistry of the Departments of Chemistry of ULB and UAntwerp in Belgium announce the availability of a full time

PhD position in the field of organic synthesis and homogeneous catalysis

Job description

As a master with a good theoretical and practical knowledge of organic synthetic chemistry you will investigate the development of synthetic routes towards fine chemicals based on building blocks and their derivatives originating from lignin. The methods to be developed are C-H and C-O bond functionalization reactions.

Your Profile

The ideal candidate for the position holds a master degree in chemistry or master degree in bioscience engineering (option chemistry) with hands-on experience in analytical separation techniques, mass spectrometry, preparative purification techniques, and structural characterization of organic molecules. The ability to work in a team as well as good communication/writing skills and a good mastery of the English language is required. Interest in multidisciplinary research is an advantage.

Additional info

During the 4 years PhD you will perform part of your research at the Free University of Brussels and the University of Antwerp. Your PhD diploma will be a joint PhD of both universities. The distance between both universities is only 50 km and both cities are well connected via public transport. The selected candidate is expected to begin in the autumn of 2019. For more information on the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry at ULB and the Organic Synthesis team at UAntwerp visit the respective group websites: http://chimorg.ulb.ac.be/ and https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/rg/orsy/

Interested?

Send a detailed CV and motivation letter to gevano@ulb.ac.be and bert.maes@uantwerpen.be ASAP and before January 15th 2019. Please mention “Application PhD EOS” in the subject line.
