Postdoctoral Research Assistant - LHC BPM Project

Particle Physics, Denys Wilkinson Building, Keble Road, Oxford

Grade 7: £32,236 - £39,609 p.a.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at the John Adams Institute to work on the LHC BPM consolidation project This full-time post is available for a fixed-term duration of 24 months, with the possibility of extension.

With its 1070 monitors, the LHC BPM system is the largest BPM system in the world. It measures the position of all bunches to provide the global machine orbit at 25Hz and a resolution of a few microns for automatic orbit feedback stabilisation. Without this system the LHC cannot function, necessitating high reliability. In addition, the front-end components are located in the accelerator tunnel, requiring a radiation tolerant design. The current electronics is foreseen to reach its end of life by 2025. A 6.5MCHF project has therefore been put in place by CERN to consolidate the system.

The JAI has recognised expertise in BPM and associated signal processing system design, including fast digitisation systems employing field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join the team developing the front-end acquisition electronics for this vital LHC system.

The successful candidate will design, produce and characterize a first prototype of the front-end electronics for this new system based on broadband RF signal acquisition and processing in the multi-GS/s regime. In addition the successful candidate will be expected to take a lead role in the publication and presentation of results and to support the work of other team members.

Applicants should hold, or be close to completion of, a doctorate in electronic engineering or applied physics, or a closely-related discipline. They should also have a solid background in RF and telecommunication technologies, and experience in mixed signal processing and FPGA programming, as well as knowledge of RF measurement techniques, design of high-frequency electronics and microwave circuits, and knowledge and application of signal theory, mathematical techniques and tools. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, plan and execute research activities, and work in a team.

This person will ideally be based at CERN and become an associated member of the personnel within the BE-BI Group. When based in Oxford, teaching duties of up to 3 hours per week during University term time may be required.
