Postdoctoral Research Assistant - Observing and Modelling the Formation of Clouds in the Atmospheres of the Solar System’s Giant Planets

Department of Physics, Clarendon Laboratory, Parks Road, Oxford

Grade 7: £32,236 – £39,609 p.a.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in observing and modelling the formation of clouds in the atmospheres of the Solar System’s giant planets. The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration of 3 years.

This project will be concerned with understanding better the formation of clouds in the atmospheres of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune through improved analysis and interpretation of ground-based spectroscopic observations of these planets in the near-infrared and thermal infrared and the development of atmospheric interpretation models.

The successful candidate will conduct retrieval analyses of recently observed data and contribute to the development of models such as cloud microphysics and radiative equilibrium models to: a) enable better interpretation of these observations; and b) potentially better constrain the retrieval of atmospheric information from them. The candidate will also help design and propose new observations of these planets.

Applicants should hold or be close to completion of a doctorate in physics or a related field and ideally a strong background in in atmospheric physics, and planetary observations and analysis. Previous experience in the fields of atmospheric physics and retrieval theory will be an advantage. Candidates are expected to demonstrate academic excellence, a keen interest in planetary physics, and the ability to work independently. The post-holder will have the opportunity to teach.

Please direct enquiries about the role to Professor Patrick Irwin (patrick.irwin@physics.ox.ac.uk).

You will be required to upload a brief statement of research interests, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on Friday 22 February 2019 can be considered.
