The Assistant Dean works closely with the Department Chairs, the School Director, the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Services, the Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration, and other administrative staff. The Assistant Dean will also work closely with the College faculty and the Office of Graduate Studies and Professional Education to develop ways to more effectively develop innovative graduate programs, recruit graduate students and focus on enhancing the diversity of the graduate programs within the College. The Assistant Dean will also coordinate with the Colleges development officer to bolster the communication and stewardship between fellowship donors and graduate students benefitting directly from their gifts. CEOE is home to over 140 graduate students. The Assistant Dean will oversee effective delivery of all graduate-level student-support, academic and financial services, and advisement functions in the College. These services encompass all aspects of the graduate experience from the application process through degree conferral. The Assistant Dean will work to enhance the visibility of the academic programs within the graduate communities both external and internal to the University and assists students in ways that ensure their success at the University.The Assistant Dean will be responsible for helping in the development and implementation of new graduate degree and certificate programs.


  • Coordinate the current graduate degree and certificate programs within the College, which currently offers six Ph.D. degrees, four Master of Science degrees, a Master of Arts degree, and two certificate programs.
  • Direct and manage the Colleges participation in interdisciplinary degrees with other Colleges and the dual degree Ph.D. program with Xiamen University.
  • Lead initiatives to develop and implement new graduate programs and degrees focused on multidisciplinary initiatives and diversified recruitment opportunities for the College.
  • Assist Chairs/Director and faculty in developing strategic recruitment initiatives on behalf of the College using the Slate admissions technologies administered by the University.
  • Collaborate with the College development officer to enhance visibility of student accomplishments directly related to donor funding, including direct communication between students receiving donor funding and donors providing student funding.
  • Manage the delivery of graduate academic advisement functions and graduate-student support and financial services for the College.
  • Serve as the Colleges graduate liaison with the Universitys Office of Graduate Studies and Professional Education, the Office of International Students and Scholars, the Registrars Office, University Assessment Office, Student Financial Services, the Career Services Center, and Student Health Services.
  • Prepare reports on behalf of the College as it relates to all aspects of graduate education and research (i.e. annual NSF Survey and Ocean Leadership Survey). Oversee the graduate admissions process the Colleges three academic units, including reporting to administration and faculty, applicant communication and visits, new student funding opportunities, and offer details to admitted students.
  • Participate and attend recruitment conferences and fairs, particularly those focused on diversity recruitment.
  • Conferences may include but are not limited to: SACNAS, McNair, HENAAC, and ABCRMS. Develop and facilitate an annual Professional Development Seminar Series for graduate students in CEOE and collaborate with other units and Colleges at the University.
  • Manage all aspects of the CEOE Graduate Student Mentorship Program in conjunction with the Leadership Team, the Deans Advisory Council and other active alumni of the College. Leverage resources from the Universities Office of Career Services for expansion of the program.
  • Direct the graduate academic milestone process to motivate student progress towards degree completion, including regular communication to all graduate students regarding current academic status and expectations.
  • Direct the tracking of graduate student funding in the CEOE graduate student database. Interface with all faculty for funding information on all graduate students, School safety net and all non-sponsored funding, and provide the information to the Finance Office for LAM processing.
  • Direct the completion of all internal university funding paperwork for graduate students in the College including the GSCRF, SAFF, JED, and On-boarding Data form for newly hired students.
  • Manage all graduate-level course scheduling, course evaluation, and new course approvals for the College.
  • Plan and manage New Graduate Student Orientation for the College, including the mandatory New Graduate Student Safety Training.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Services concerning planning, coordination, and production of Commencement and Convocation.
  • Manage the Colleges participation in the Doctoral Hooding ceremony. Plan and manage the annual Honors Day ceremony for the College.
  • Coordinate with the Graduate Student Association to host the annual Graduate Student Research Symposium.
  • Collaborate with the Colleges IT staff and the Environmental Public Education staff to change and advise on future graduate-level related changes to the Colleges website, social media accounts and internal intranet system.
  • Work daily with students and faculty through in-person, telephone, electronic, and written correspondence.
  • Serve on College Academic Council committee to advise on graduate-level initiatives and projects.
  • Serve on the Colleges Diversity Committee and advise the Chief Diversity Advocate on recruitment and retention initiatives as it relates to Graduate Programming.
  • Coordinate with the Lewes Facilities Operations staff to coordinate housing assignments and services in the Daiber Housing Complex for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
  • May supervise administrative assistant. Support the Dean with other academic related tasks as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree, Masters preferred, and five years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of University academic programs, policies and procedures and student services systems preferred.
  • Extensive experience with a student records information system. Knowledge and understanding of higher education laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Ability to plan, develop, and implement strategic plans and programs.
  • Ability to provide academic, professional, and administrative leadership at the graduate level. Attention to detail essential, as well as solid organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously under deadline pressure.
  • Ability to work independently, be self-motivated, and make college-level administrative and procedural decisions.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment. Knowledge of financial/business analysis techniques.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the concepts and principles of the operation and administration of academic programs.



  • Ability to travel to professional meetings and other external events.
  • Must travel between two University campuses regularly.
